2nd what Buster said Daniel. I had really bad urge incontinence for about 2 months, had to stay close to a toilet most times but that subsidized significantly over time. I now go 6+ hours a night. Remember, this IS major surgery and your whole plumbing system is aggravated. I know it is very hard to be patient, but all will improve over time. Hang in there!

Hi guys, I'm now 6 days post surgery and 4 days post cath removal. I guess/hope I'm doing okay. I'm still having to go quite frequently (about every 2 hours on average). But I'm more concerned with the fact that it's still a little bloody and that it still burns some. Is this normal or could I be developing a urinary tract infection?

Hi Daniel. I bled for 4+ months! Everyone is different of course, but if you read back over some other experiences here many have gone weeks and months before bleeding stopped. My surgeon (Dr Das) told me to make sure I don't force/push bowel movements as this will cause more bleeding, so be sure to take something like Miralax to aid with this and also maybe a high fiber cereal daily. I too had burning for a little while which I attributed to inflammation of my urethra. If this persists (say anther week) you may want to consult your MD. If it is an infection though your urine will be cloudy (not just blood) and perhaps have a fowl odor. However, it just sounds like your experiencing normal post-HoLEP side-effects. Hope this helps set your mind at ease. Just try and be patient.

Hi Daniel,

Blayneb has good advice. I was advised by one of my nurses not to strain during a BM. I was on a high fiber breakfast so I did not have those issues. As for the bleeding I was finished in about 2 weeks but it can last longer as Blayneb reports. If you have concerns call your surgeon’s office. They know your case and your care is their responsibility.

As for the urgency mine went on for several months. It was usually brought on by my moving. After about 2 weeks out my wife and I took an 1100 mile road trip. Anyway since I was driving I did not move the that area of my body. I did get in a situation where I had to hold my water. I finally gave up after about 3.5 hours. The was a major goal for me. Latter on in the trip I ate several oranges, did I regret that! I had urgency big time.

Did you doctor give you a list of food to stay away from? I have my list if you need it.

One other thought. I have a document that talks about Kegel exercises. I could scan a copy and send it to you after I get home.

I had HoLEP a week ago. My doctor told me that I would have some leakage for 4 to 6 weeks. That has not been my experience. I am 63 and had a 105 gm prostate. I have absolutely no bladder control. I have to wear adult diapers at all times. My doctor has assured me that it will eventually get better, but so far it just keeps dribbling out.

Hi Guest,

Each of us are different. I am 73 and had a prostate about 214 grams. They removed about 110 grams. I was scheduled for about 2 to 3 hours of surgery. The actual time was 1 hour. It is my understanding that incontinence lasts depending on age and time in surgery. Dr. Krambeck estimated my incontinence would stop some where around 6 months.

I wore paper underwear for the first 3 weeks before graduating to pads. My third week my wife and I were traveling so I used underwear and a pad to guard against accidents.

I am 6 months post surgery and I am nearly dry.

This a rough time. I had lots of rash and I was changing diapers several times a day. I did a lot Kegel exercises then and I am still doing them!

Did your doctor give you a handout on Kegels and food to stay away from?

Buster is right on Guest. I had a 150 gram prostate but mine was long, causing difficulties and my surgery was 3 hours (I am 62). I am now 7 months out and still dribble/drip and wear 1 to 2 light duty shields daily. i am sure this is due to the surgery length and the amount of trauma my bladder sphincter may have endured. I too leaked freely the first few weeks to a month and wore pants the first several weeks. Things slowly improved over time. Kegels are a MUST! Learn them and do them daily/hourly - you cannot do them to much. You're only 1 week out - patience is the word! Or 2 words - patience and kegels! Good luck!

Thank you, Blayneb, that's very reassuring. I guess patience is the thing. I don't think it's cloudy and it isn't foul smelling. And the Mirilax is a great suggestion.

I am doing the Kegel exercises and the frequency is declining a bit and I have more control. Only 3 times last night!

I also did not get a "list of food to stay away from".
Would it be possible for you to publish it so that all can benefit?
Thanks

Here is the list of bladder irritants that IU health recommends limiting or eliminate to help increase bladder control.

Caffeine
Alcohol
Coffee
Tea
Citrus fruits
Tomato bases
Spicy food
Milk
Chocolate
Artificial sweeteners
Vinegar

They also say to take in 13 cups of fluids each day. That works out to be a little over 3 liters. I usually get 2 to 2.5 Iters.

As bladder control returns I am adding some of the irritants back into my diet.

I hope this helps.

I'm now 12 days post my HoLEP and I guess doing ok.  I still have some blood and some burning (both less) which I know is not unusual but the last few days I'm having some intermittent itching inside sort of at the base of my penis.  Is this something others have experienced?  Thanks in advance for any comments.

Hi Daniel,

I can’t remember that sensation but I am not surprised as itching goes along with healing. During my healing process I had a sensation of electric current as the nerves healed.

Are you doing your Kegel exercises? They help to reduce the incontinence.

Good luck, it sounds like you are on track.
