Had two thrombosed external hemmies. One the size of my thumb. Very painful. Had a hemorrhoidectomy 7 days ago. It wasn't that bad! Same pain level as the hemmies. First day didn't feel very good, but percocet 10s helped. In fact I doubled the dose the first two days and felt nothing. Bowel movement was uncomfortable but not extremely painful like they say. It took three days for first BM. Now a week later and I feel 50% better.
My advice - ask Dr for strongest pain meds he will give prior to surgery. These will make you constipated so he gave me Colace twice a day and Miralax once a day. Take it. Make your stool like water. Don't eat a lot or heavy foods. I ate chicken soup often. My goal was try to use the bathroom the least amount I had to.
Get a hot sitz bath ready after every BM or just take one every hour. Feels good.
Also nurse told me to keep area dry not moist, so put a lamp (shade off) between your legs for dry heat. It's tricky but if you can maneuver it it is soothing and helps healing.
That's it. Nothing to it really. I have a low tolerance for pain and it was not that bad at all. There is pain, but surgery isn't pain free. You won't be crying or running to the ER for morphine like someone posted. Don't let the posts scare you into not getting it. I did for 5 years and I wish I had done it then so I could get my quality of life back.

I think having only external hemmies removed would make a big difference in the pain. Most of pain is internal.
