Why are you even commenting on this site? Have you ever heard the saying ... "If you can't say anything nice .. say nothing at all" .. the world doesn't always need to hear what you think or have to say? Seriously? We all exercise and we all know our bodies? If we experience weight gain from taking HCTZ then we know it .. cause it's a different kind of weight! It's a puffiness and a bloating feeling .. associated with your blood pressure just not going down? Another obvious sign that this medication is just not working for you? Sometimes if you dose is 12.5 mg you don't notice the subtle signs till your dr increases you to 25 mg. Then the signs become more obvious as was the case with me. At first I couldn't explain my weight gain .. thought it was age .. metabolism etc. Then when we doubled my dose .. I experienced the dizzy blurred vision .. nausea .. being lightheaded .. joint pain .. tightness in chest .. with bp still remaining high .. Then .. it all began to add up and make sense. Please be kind here .. we all just looking to share experiences and information .. not to throw insults :-)

Really? You are totally rude! Not everyone that is overweight sits on their butt! There are health issues and Meds that can add to a persons weight gain. To quote you, may I say, "Look. I hate to be rude but".......maybe you should think about educating yourself before offering your comments. Just saying!

HCTZ causes blood sugar levels to go up, which causes insulin levels to go up. Insulin makes weight loss impossible. I've gone off HCTZ and only take ACE inhibitors for BP and have seen LESS fluid retention and better control of blood pressure. Plus, weight is starting to come down.

I maintained a healthy weight throughout my pregnancy. I only gained 22 lbs and lost it writhing the first week post pardum. I was diagnosed with post pardum preeclampsia. Not everyone has high blood pressure because of laziness. Sometimes circumstances due to hormones or drastic changes in our bodies can cause shock triggering high blood pressure or other ailments. I have gains 6 lbs in three weeks on this medication HCTZ and I have been eating and drinking the same as I was during my pregnancy. I don't drink sodas or any kind of thing that is harmful to my body. I am thinking about just quitting this medicint because it's causing me more harm than good.

Thank you Sally! I agree with you. I have been on Hydro for 2 months and have put on 8 lbs. I do exercise and eat fairly well. This one person must not have the "weight gain" side effect. Frustrating! Good luck to you.

I'm now completely off High Blood Pressure medicine since April 2016. It took me 2 years to do what I needed to finally be off & my bp be normal. I believe it's best to work out when on these meds it also matters what you eat. Once I started watching my sodium intake & stopped drinking wine the edema in my legs went down Significantly. I still wear compression socks daily. If you don't have some get some they work wonders.

I still brisk walk/ workout at least 5x+ a week & that helped too. My suggestion is if you take High blood pressure meds or ANY medication that says 'Do NOT DRINK while taking this' Then take it from me 'DO NOT DRINK WHILE TAKING MEDICATION!' idgaf if you take your meds in the morning & then have a glass a wine at night, you will gain weight. Trust me I learned the hard way it makes you BLOW UP/Swell uP! & It happens fast.

Thanks for your rudeness, but the only lifestyle change that I've undertaken since beginning HCTZ is an INCREASE in my exercise by about 30%, going up from about 10,000 steps a day to 13,000 on average. In the 8 months that I've been taking HCTZ, my weight has gone up about 20 pounds, I am always exhausted, I sweat under the slightest amount of physical activity and break out in cold sweats a couple of times a day, among other nasty side effects.

You must be a pharmaceutical salesman, I have been skinny all my life with very little excersize until I started taking this drug. I now excersize everyday and eat better and I am still gaining wait. If you don't know what you are talking about, don't say anything.

I was on this medicine for 2 years and have ballooned 30 lbs. I've monitored my weight since then and it seem I gain 10-15 lbs every 6 months. I also workout. I've ruled out other things and 2 years ago is when I started taking it as well. For one week awhile back, I stopped taking it and I lost 7 lbs but also increasing my exercise. Watching sodium is also key.

Not having one of the side effects of weight gain not fair. I have actually gained. So I do drink once a week but even my doc said that it's fine. And yet there are those who can do it every day and be fine. I've experimented it myself and in the passed year or so I have gained around 40 lbs. I've also been exercising and I find that it's not good to weigh myself a few times a week but at least once a week or stay off the scale and measure how I feel and see in the mirror! And how clothes fit. I completely understand how one needs a bp med but my doc also said that he'd eventually like to see me off once I can make some changes.

Some still have to be on them, it's the genetics (runs in mine!) and frustrating, taking a med that helps but making you gain more weight and potentially cause more problems with the side effects! There has to be a supplement, or increasing more good foods. Since going off them in the beginning of this week I actually feel better, feet not hurting, no spasms, and feeling tired all the time and sweating a lot with little physical activity. I did pee oday so many times it actually felt good, where I couldn't really go much and felt like I had to drink a ton just to function. I also feel lighter and not as heavy which I think was the bloating. I think getting my weight down which also seemed to be the cause would help and bring those percentages down.
