Hello Everyone..

I have been on this medication for many years. I have gained 40 lbs... I am going to discontinue... eat very healthy, start exercising more.. Perhaps start running slowly... as I take it for water retention, I'm going to research natural foods that can help with this. I'm am completely DONE... with it!!!!! it's important to listen to your Doctor, however, I think there is a link to obesity not researched.

I was not on it for years and I gained 60 pounds. Then I went on it and lost 30 of those.

It is different for everyone. Some lose some gain but having consultation from doctor to know of unusual weight gain over a period of time is just territory with some medication. I was on it for 2 years before I gained 40 lbs. My doctor couldn't figure it out. I stopped one week and upped my exercise and lost 7 lbs in that week. I haven't taken them in 3 1/2 weeks and have gained 14 lbs I hear is rebound water retention gain I hope eventually it comes off. I just feel better not being on it and I pee more easily and not sweating on my face so many over little activity and having sweat and gold spells. I have heard that rapid weight gain is common coming off a water pill mostly water.

It is amazing about the sodium intake it seems we have to watch our sodium very carefully even just with snacks occasionally throughout the week. Even those little things add up. I notice on days where I drink lots of water and then empty it, a salad for a meal, the next day I feel and look lighter. Even the smallest dose of sodium from foods I am bloated. I really have to increase my exercise. I feel like since I don't take the meds anymore the weight is creeping up more.

I started taking HCTZ about 7 years ago and started gaining weight but thought it was related to menopause. I then developed heart palpitations and my doctor prescribed a beta blocker. Two years later, my weight was 15 pounds heavier and my LDL was 50 points higher and my doctor suggested I take a statin. I googled HCTZ and beta blockers and saw they both increase LDL. I am now tapering off of both of them.

I've been on HCTZ for 30 years now and just discovered you could gain weight from this med. This got me thinking when I started to take this med. I was 28yrs old and 100 pds. Gained 30 pds is a few months. Asked Doctor and he pretty much told me to diet. I'm now 58 and on this HCTZ for 30yrs now. Went from 100 to 198 now. Over the years I have jogged, dieted, you name it I've done it. No body understands why I don't lose weight with all the physical work I do. Sure we all put on some weight with age but this is nuts! After reading this I stopped taking HCTZ over a two week period. That goodness it's winter time so water retention limited. Right away I noticed I'm not as hungry as I was. I'm retaining a little water but can live with it if I may have a chance to lose weight. I swear if the weight starts to come off I'm going to be upset with my Doctors. This weight issue has been going on way too long and if HCTZ as been anything to do with it. RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I'm glad I found this website.

BTW are you still off HCTZ?

That is incorrect statement. Maybe that is your story but I work out 5 days a week. I have gained about 8 pounds in two months.

Just wondering if you lost weight when you stopped this med? I also take this for water retention only and have done so for 30 yrs. I went from 100 to 198. I know we normally gain weight with years but my weight has become a health issue both mentally and physically. I've tried everything over the years and everyone that knows me cannot understand why I cannot loss weight. Stopped taking this pill since I discovered this website and did noticed I'm not as hungry anymore. I'm retaining some water but it's winter time so I may be able to figure out something else by the time summer rolls around. I did start drinking fennel water for obesity and it's also a diuretic. Anyway, it would be interesting to find out if you lost weight once you stopped and to know what you take now.

I'm thankful for you post. I've been on this medicine for 30 years. Over the years I've gone from 100 to 198. I've dieted and workout over the years and yet I still gain. I did lose a few times but that's when I reduced my calories too 700 a day and/or worked out 7 days a week. Even with working out 7 days a week I only lose 30 pds. The women at the gym said I should be skinny I work out so much. Anyway, I stopped this medicine and will see how the water retention goes for now. I'm going to be pissed if all my weight issues has been this dame pills. LOL
