Hello! It is not known with certainty what the cause of Tourettes Syndrome is but there are some speculations.
It seems to be hereditary disorder in which parents have 50% chances of passing the gene to their children. Boys are more likely to display symptoms that girls are.

So, it comes down to certain gene abnormality that affects the brain's metabolism of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, which are neurotransmitters-chemicals in the brain that serve for communication between brain and other parts of the body.

When there are normal levels of these chemicals, everything (that these chemicals have effect to) in the body functions normally. However, when the levels of these chemicals are increased or decreased, certain problem may occur.

This is why many people with TS may also suffer from Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities, obsessive-compulsive disorder, sleep disorders, etc
