Hi stingray,

I found I couldn't function at all the first 5 days when I stopped. I had diarrhea, aches and pains all over and a really runny nose.

After that it got a lot better very quickly. I used immodium for the diarrhea and plain panadol for the aches, which helped get me over the hump.

Hang in there! It's worth it.

Hi, I am addicted to codeine 9 years, I have 27. I take 4-5-7 pills per day, each has 10 mg of codeine. In my worst periods I was taking 13 pills. I am afraid that I had damaged liver and kidneys for good. I am also afraid of hospitalization so noone knows that. I also have an anxiety disorder and visiting gestalt therapist but I am ashamed of not telling her nothing these 2 years. How can I admit that, I can't go to hospital, it terrfies me.

I had stopped once, for six months but I have terrible menstrual cramps and often headaches so it didn't last. I also tried taking other pills, without codeine but it wasn't helpful. I tried to stop several times and I never had any physical symptoms, so I suppose my addiction is psychical. That pills also have paracetamol which destroys liver and kidneys, 210 g of paracetamol. I had high enzymes in 2008 and never checked it after that. I am scared of knowing.

How to stop? Does that amount of codeine can permanently damage my health? How to get rid of psychical addiction?

I am on day 5 of cold turkey. It has been the longest roughest five days of my life. I am 26 and have been hooked on codeine for 5 years. I have tried, in the past, recreational drugs such as speed, cocaine, mdma, exstacy and cannabis. Nothing has had me like the codeine has. The withdrawal has been harsh to say the least. I have had everything everyone has mentioned. The involuntary movements and restlessness is the worst.
I have tried and failed at quiting codeine at least six times. This time however I haven't caved.
I was suprised to see how many people, who like myself, went from chemist to chemist buying packs of Nurofen and solpadine max etc. I have now come to realise how badly these EVIL little pills controlled and ruined my life. I have had to be away for four days to get over the worst of it.
Day 5 and I am still feeling the withdrawal. Then again when your body is used to 30 x 30/500 co-codamol, I guess it could go on a while. I am going to suck it up and go to the gym tomorrow.
Just want to thank each and everyone of you for your posts. I have found strength in them and hope you are all free of this evil, leathal little substance. I am free and will be forever. I will post again when I am completely clear.
best wishes,
Lee xxx

I am 23 years old, my addiction started off with morphine at 16, from 17 til 20 i suffered much anxiety and depression resulting in me using MDMA, speed, meth and large quantities of marijuana.
At the age of 20 i spent 2 months in a psychiatric unit suffering drug induced psychosis(this sounds really bad but yeah i wasn't fully loopy or anything). From this time on i quit the stimulants and got back into the downers, currently i extract 60 panafen plus(the generic brand of nurofen plus) using a cold water extraction which seperates the c**p ie ibuprofen from the mixture. Only been doing this for 6 months, prior to that it was 2 and a half years of 40tabs a day without extraction.
I am sure there is no one who can help me with anything more than positive conversation, i write this simply to get it off my chest and to make myself take into consideration what i am writing and finally put a decent effort into becoming drug free.
Anyway that's my story, if anyone can see this i will be writing regular posts as i have seen a doctor last week to try for the 5th time to get off the codeine!! I wish myself god speed and good luck on this journey of which i am positive will not be easy.

TO BLACKPOOLBOY86 - Keep up the good work mate i see many similarities in our habits and am one step behind you ready to take some action in my life also!

Www, hi everyone who hasp osted and will post regading codiene withdrawl. Like aussie 888 above I alternated between the panafens and the extra's etc and occaisionally get the 30 straights from friends on compo. Its difficult to describe sometimes its just like the flu or bad snoiffles, sometimes like full cold turkey with harry the horse, vomiting - headaches etc. I keep coming off the sh*t and then 3 weeks or 2months later again I cant help but start up again. This time some kindly id**t donated 50 valium to help with the process and its left me feeling tearful and near suicidal. i never felt this depressed before ... be warned ,codiene withdrawl and valium do not mix well. Good Luck the feeling of victory the first few days when you are off the sh*t and past the punishment is almost worth the cycle.

Hi, I live in France and it is exactly the same here, you can buy codeine over the counter. I have been popping for years, always finding a convenient pain as an excuse. I have been high which is great but now I am lethargic and overweight(codeine constipates). I want to turn my life around but every time I try, the cold turkey is too much. No-one knows of my addiction(except probably my husband) and I'm worried about losing my job if they find out so I'll go on taking it. HELP!!

I'm absolutely positive that I went into early menopause at 43 because of this drug from hell!! And have lost all libido!! After reading this site I am on my 4th day of cold turkey and it is difficult. All kind of illnesses coming out of the closet now, especially the demons that irritate my legs and feet at night, impossible to get any shut eye. But I will get through this, when I look back at how I was, things can only get better. Good luck to everyone.

A little hope here for you all is Loperamide - It's the holy grail for coming off of any opiates. It is the active ingriediant in Immodium. Read this thread and hope this helps.

It worked for me, I came off 600mg of codiene a day (for 5 years), and it was an absolute breeze usuing Loperamide.

In the UK you can buy cheap packs of 6 for under £1 in most supermarkets - just don't but the branded ones.
