I have returned from a day trip to the near farming villages and discovered some strange oval rash on the skin of the arm. I cannot recall any insect bites and I am not sure if I should react. I have heard that this might be connected with Lyme disease and I would like to know if that condition is caused by the insects.

It is and it would be a smart thing for you to go to the doctor immediately. If the rash is in oval/circular shape, this means that there is a great chance you have been infected by a Lyme disease. And if it is dealt with immediately, there will be no consequences. If not, there is an entire set of different problems that might occur and that is something you do not want to experience.
