MY BROTHER HAS PHONED ME TONIGHT SAYING HE HAS BLOOD FROM HIS ANUS; QUITE A LOT BY HIS DESCRIPTION: I HAVE ASKED HIM TO GET MEDICAL HELP, BUT I AM NOT SURE THAT HE WILL. I KNOW THAT HE IS AN EXCESSIVE DRINKER (ALCOHOLIC). I GET THE IMPRESSION HE WILL NOT SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION; AS HE THINKS HE IS A MAN'S MAN; SO CAN YOU TELL ME HOW TO PERSUADE HIM TO AT LEAST SEE A DOCTOR/NURSE, OR GIVE ME SOME REASONS FOR HIM TO SEEK ATTENTION. HE SAYS HE CANT SIT OR WALK! NEEDLESSLY TO SAY HE WAS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL WHEN HE PHONED. I AM HIS BROTHER AND AM WORRIED FOR HIM

It is always difficult to get an alcoholic to seek medical attention. My mother drank and never saw a doctor so I understand. I might be able to give you some advice if I can?

Whilst drinking could be causing your brother the bleeding problem, it may be a perfectly simple issue such as piles (haemrroids) spelt wrongly I know!

Is the bleeding after a bowel movement? If he has piles then he can lose a large amount of blood which is normally bright red in colour. This will happen when he goes to the toilet and quite possibly in between as well if the blighters are large.

If the blood is darker in colour then it will be coming from his upper digestive system and that's more of a concern. Has he been sick? Does he have any pain? Where is the pain? How old is he? Has this been going on for some time? A bit more detail would be helpful but given that he is an alcoholic he could be irritating his stomach lining with the excessive drink, but he would be vommitting if that was the case too.

He has given you this worry and being a drinker he will not care about it and probably doesn't understand what he is saying. I know you are trying to persuade him to get to the Emergency Room but I know what it is like to live with a drinker; they don't want help. He will only decide to do something when he hits rock bottom and who knows when that rock bottom will be?

The best thing you can do is get support for you but I understand completely you want your brother to get help now. I hope all is simply explained when he does. Good luck.
