That gives me hope. My son is 2 and has the same issue you did. His left kidney is the size of a 4 month olds and the right is the size of a 5 yr old. In 6 months the smaller one hasn't grown at all. The doc is going to get him a dye test that he will have to filter out so they can take pics and see how badly scared his little one is.. If it is over 15% they will remove it; if not, they will do surgery to fix the reflux so he will not scar it anymore than it already is.. either way my son has to have surgery. I am scared and sad because they told me that this was something he got while in the womb. It is sad that I can't help or fix it ... I am worried for him to lose his kidney.. this is scary :( But I do have hope . thanks.

This is called renal atrophy. There are many causes of different sizes of kidneys. One of the common cause is kidney disease. I strongly suggest you to go run some tests help you doctor determine the root cause. Hope everything's fine.

do you have a kidney disease or urinary tract infection. These problems can make the kidneys shrink. Do you have other symptoms besides kidneys become smaller?

My right kidney is also smaller. I had kidney surgery in the past because I had multiple kidney infections. (UTI) My doctor found my right kidney was smaller in an ultrasound of the kidneys. They said it isn't a big deal unless it's bothering you. Mine is, so there resulting in doing a bunch of test on me to see how much it's actually functioning. I'm 15 years old and have had major kidney problems my whole life. But, as long as your kidney isn't bothering you and doesn't have scar tissue it should be fine that one of your kidneys is smaller then the other.

  Good Luck!! Hope I helped.

:|  I hate to hear you have to go through more stuff.  My question is this; what has happened since your posting.  I am worried. My son had reflux surgery. Luckily he was seen and had his surgery done at the Dell Children's Hospital in Austin, Texas. He is 3 and has a left smaller kidney (size of 6 month old) and right (the size of a 7 year old).  He has 20% functionality in the left kidney.. and almost 100% in his right kidney with no scarring. Left kidney is very scarred.  My question to you is what should I be looking for in pain of the kidney for my son?  around what age did you feel as though your kidney was giving you problems. Did you have injuries to the kidney? Just curious. I am sure that at some point we may have to have his kidney removed and if so; I will be donating my kidney to help him unless it is not necessary.  Any thoughts??? thanks

My right kidney is only working at 20% and is really tiny, but my left kidney is working at 70% and is double the size and is working for both pretty much, my doctor has told me that it is fine but if my percentage in my right kidney goes down I need to get surgery.. My kidney till to this day causes me a bunch of pain.. I'm only 18.. Is this okay for this to be happening at a young age?

Hey all, just found out I also have a small kidney, but mine is the left one that is smaller (7cm) than the right (11.5cm). The ultrasound people seem to think this us fine and the doc..well she wasnt sure she said she will look it up. I dont have a gistory of heaps of UTI s that i know of or high blood pressure or any other kidney problems (yet) and am 27. Just found out about it and came here. I guess its relatively normal to have this?

Hello all, am 37 yrs old & I have just been informed by my doc that my right kidney is smaller by 0.8 mm as compared to the left one. Have also perform the blood for creatine , etc & all seems to be within the normal range. However, i still fear that my right kidney will turn down in the future. Any advice/guidance will be most welcome & this keep hauntering me.
tks for your replies. Cheers.
