Police found that phony drugs were sold through two pharmacies based in Richmond Hill and through an online pharmacy. The owner of the pharmacies is 37-year-old Andrew Sommerhalder.
The drugs were sold under label of New York pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. Authorized Viagra, which is being sold in Canada, cost from between $11 and $24 a dose depending on strength, and is manufactured at Pfizer's plant in Arnprior, Ont., with sildenafil citrate from Ireland. Police believe the bulk powder and replica tablets, which looked exactly like the genuine article, came from India. They were much cheaper but still sold under the same price.
However, there was no indication that Viagra contained any harmful substances.
Andrew Sommerhalder and his two associates face 11 charges under the Criminal Code, the Food and Drugs Act, and the Customs Act, including fraud, passing off and selling an adulterated drug.
