I am a 60 year old male.  On a CT scan, 2 small calcifications were seen on my lungs that the radiologist called probably pulmonary granulomata.  I originally went to the doctor because of a cough.  Now he wants to refer me for a consultation with a pulmonologist.  I'm not sure I think it's necessary to go.  What is a pulmonologist going to do other than look at the xrays?

Hi Guest,

Hopefully the pulmonologist, they specialize in the lungs, will find out what is going on.

Pulmonary granulomata's are basically areas of inflammation that usually originate due to an infection.  If so, that infection needs to be treated.  They often cause shortness of breath.

I'm not sure where you live but, in the US for example, in the upper Midwest there are certain fungi that often cause lung infections - many people never know they have.

See the pulmonologis.

Good luck.
