My son wants to have a parrot. I’ve heard that parrots can transmit a disease called psittacosis on humans. I would like to have more information about this. How dangerous it is to have a parrot in a house with a child at the age of 5? How can I be sure that parrot is not infected with psitacosis?

I understand that you are worried about psittacosis. It is infectious disease, but symptoms are mild, flu-like and non specific. Symptoms of affected bird are sleepiness, breathing difficulties, shivering and weight loss. But bird can also have latent infection. Antibiotics are added to birds feed, like chlortetracycline. It’s important to keep the cage clean. You can take the bird at the veterinarian and test it before you bring it to your home.
