I have been reading that rabies is a disease caused by a virus found in the saliva of infected animals. It is scary what it can be transmitted to pets and humans by bites, or possibly by contamination of an open cut. Since untreated, rabies causes a painful death I would like to hear more about this. Can you tell me the best way to prevent rabies and avoid of being infected.

Most animals can be infected by the virus of rabies. After this, animals are able to transmit the disease to man, which is why, almost everyone knows a lot about rabies. Infected bats, raccoons, foxes, skunks, dogs or cats provide the greatest risk for people to be infected with rabies. Rabies may also spread through exposure to infected domestic farm animals, while squirrels, rodents and rabbits are seldom infected. The best way to prevent rabies is to have your pets vaccinated against rabies. Any pets, which are exposed to wild animals, are at risk for being infected with rabies. Many local health departments conduct public vaccination clinics for dogs and cats, so your veterinarian can also vaccinate your pet against rabies. If your cat or dog has been bitten or attacked by a wild animal or has bites or scratches of unknown origin, you have to call your local health department to report the incident. If your cat or dog has bitten a person, call animal control center to report this accident. The best way to prevent rabies is to protect your pets from stray or wild animals and keep your pets from running loose.
