Hello,
About a month ago my pap smear showed I have bacterial vaginosis and my ob gyn gave me a prescription for Flagyl to take for 10 days. I had horrible side effects while I was on this antibiotic that made those 10 days really unbearable. But I thought it was worth it because discharge and itching I had stopped, but unfortunately over the last few days I’m starting to experience the same symptoms again.
I still have to see my obgyn to confirm this, but I think I have BV again. From what I’ve read it seems that the Cipro is the other alternative for Flagyl for treating BV, and I’m wondering will it be more effective?

Hi Guest,
Discuss this with your doctor.
Both medications are commonly used to treat BV. Yes, Flagyl does tend to have some severe side effects but Cipro also has some side effects.

Hi,
it's hard to say if Cipro would be more effective for your BV because that mostly depends on the strain of bacteria which are causing the infection in the first place. Cipro does have side effects as well, but I think most people would agree that Flagyl has far worse ones, but if Cipro isn't effective for your BV than it really doesn't make much difference if it has too much side effects or not. What I'd recommend you to ask your ob gyn for is Flagyl vaginal tablet - you place it just like a tampon and that not only minimizes the side effects from taking the pills orally, but it also fights the infection right on the spot.
