Well Nadean jaundice is a yellow discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes. It is often seen in newborn infants. This discoloration is caused by a yellow substance which is called bilirubin. Infants who have with high blood levels of bilirubin sometimes develop the yellow color when bilirubin accumulates in the skin.
Jaundice is not a disease! It is better to say that it is a symptom of an elevated blood bilirubin level. It is not painful but some serious complications can occur if elevated bilirubin levels are not treated in a short time. Jaundice is, as well, a marker which is used to identify those infants who may be at risk from developing severe hyperbilirubinemia. Severe hyperbilirubinemia can be toxic to the nervous system of infants and it can potentially cause brain damage.
