side effects of monistat 1

I know these are old posts... however, I just recently had the same problem! I developed a slight YI after antibiotic use, I bought the monistat 3 day treatment.. The first night I used it put me in extreme agony!!! Burning, itching and left me with a bad case of vulvitis .. I will never use monistat ever again!! I hope this post will be useful for any potential monistat users! Don't use it!

Not sure if this was said but my gyno said monistat 1 is super concentrated and may make symptoms feel worse before it gets better. Use a cold compact to ease the swelling and itching. It works!

I tried the monistat 1 today at work. Bad idea! It burned really badly for about two hours. I dealt with the pain though, and once I passed through the OH MY GOD MY LADY BITS ARE ON FIRE feeling, all my itchy, sore yeast infection symptoms went away. I did leak goo for a few hours, but it's no bigs. If there is a next time I'll do the 3 day one again. I had no issue with that one.

I wouldn't really recommend this to someone with a low pain tolerance or who is sensitive to the 3 or 7 day formulas.

Also, I got my YI from using a flavored condom. Seems like common sense, I know. Sugar in your hoo ha is no bueno.

SUBJECT: CLARITIN REDITAB (over the counter allergy med) to ease side effects!! :-D ==========================================================

I had the extreme side effects (burning, itching ...off the scale)...and this is what I did and it helped:

I took an over the counter allergy medicine: Claritin reditab {ready-tab}. Just one. I got some relief and 90-95% of the burning went away in a reasonable amount of time and I could deal with what was still there...not much.

In the past I had no problem with the 3 and 7 day system, but thought I'd "knock it out" in one day with the 1 (one) single insert-able egg shaped pill. Afterwards it burned like heck! I realized the dose was just too much and took a guess that it caused  allergy like symptoms (rash, burning...etc). And after taking the Claritin....it very quickly subsided. You can probably use Allegra or ANY over the counter allergy med.

No matter how much it burns use the dosage that is prescribed on the box. It took only one pill for me to feel the relieving effects.

From here on out I'll use the 7 day system to prevent the awful side effects.  :-)

WORST FEELING, EVER! Ack! Wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Monistat 1 definitely made it feel worse. I am currently typing while wearing a towel, because life sucks! Wow. Just popped 2 Benadryl, as someone suggested an allergy pill. If that works, I will update. The itch & burn is so bad that I've put a cold compress on my vag. This is the most uncomfortable I've ever felt in my life! I feel for anyone who knows what this is like. Praying for a resolve soon. God I wish I'd just went to the doc for an oral pill. It feels like Satan has gotten into my vagina & is trying to burn down, but first rubbing stinging nettles & poison ivy everywhere. Sympathies to all reading this, because we know why you're here.

Ok, back to report that I took 2 Benadryl pills & it relieved the horror show in my pants! Currently not itching, not burning. Obviously still swollen, but no pain, or irritation being felt. Going on 2 hours now. When the Bendryl subsides, I'll take another! Thanks SO MUCH to the person above me who took a Claritin & suggested treating it like an allergy. I can't express my gratitude enough! 

I am 30 and having my first ever yeast infection which is pretty scary for me. I went to my doctor first because I didn't know what I had and he just recommended taking monistat 1. So I got one yesterday. The experience has been horrible. Same side effects as everyone else. Now I'm laying in bed at 5am not able to sleep looking up reviews on my phone. I wish I had looked into other products first.

I'm 25 and just got my first yeast infection due to an antibiotic, my YI was HORRIBLE I itched myself raw and was in so much pain sleeping naked with ice on my hooha.. I called my doctor and told him about my symptoms and he told me more than likely it was a YI.... that day he prescribed me a pill ... the pill my dr prescribed DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!! 2 more days of itching and burning and total utter discomfort and last night I went to Walmart and got the monistat 1 day,,, I didn't even know there was different kinds I got one of the more expensive treatments that seemed like it would give me relief right away... I work third shift and bc I was short on time I did it in the work bathroom before I started my shift, that was 10 hours ago, there is a warmness and its still itchy but there is NO INTENSE BURNING or intense itching, based on the reviews and my own experience I would say this product is for people experiencing BAD YI symptoms, I worked through my shift with a little relief and haven't experienced any product discharge. This product is probably not for everyone but my yeast infection was as bad as some people described the side effects so prob only for ppl experiencing a horrible YI. Some of you didn't use the cream that comes with it right away? I did bc I was already so damn itchy it relieved the itching to an extent, some relief is better than none!

I also had a horrible reaction to the monistat 3 day. It had not been 24 hours between my first and second dose so it's probably just too much. Stick with the 7 day! I laughed at the post that said it was like Satan got in her vagina because that is how I feel.  I took antihistamine and am using an ice pack. I will try all the natural recommendations too like drinking lots of water, eliminating sugar in my diet, etc. I will tell my friends to stay away from this evil medicine! 

There's an oral treatment... Expensive..up to $20 for the one dose... But it worls. $20 well-spent

Can someone please tell me if this is normal or not? So I bought the 3 day (store brand) and I have never had a yeast inf in my life before. Am 25 yrs old 2 kids, so I tried the 3 day and I put it in while sitting on toilet wen to put a pad in underwear and whlie I was sitting thre putting pad on the suppository fell out into the toilet..is this normal or not? Do I do it again help!

I've taken Monistat 1 a few times because I have reocurring yeast infections. I like how quickly it works, however I also get the awful side effects. I itch like crazy after a couple hours and can't focus on anything other than my vag. I think it's caused by your body passing the ointment... The ointment starts coming out with the gross stuff it killed inside your body so of course you will get irritation as it leaves your body. What I find most helpful is right before bed wiping off everything excess so you are completely dry (yeast loves moisture) and applying a SMALL amount of the external cream. Putting on big cotton underwear cotton pajama shorts and go to bed. I try to sleep w my legs apart but if I go on my side I put a pillow between my legs so I'm still getting air down there. In the morning the torturous pain should be gone but some itching lasts until all the ointment is out of your body but it is not nearly as distracting. Don't try to remove the ointment from your body, let it happen naturally. You should be cured completely in a couple days

Wow, thank goodness for this thread. I am 42 y/o and on a second course of levoquin in five weeks. All those antibiotics gave me a yeast infection. This is maybe my third ever. I am impatient so I got the rite aid brand monistat one. Put the "capsule" in and as soon as I went to urinate, maybe and hour later, I am on fire and itching like crazy...inside and out. I have no benedryl or cortizone cream. I took a very hot bath...no soap..just soaked. Feeling better, not so much on fire anymore but still a little warm and itchy. If this ever happens again I will go to the doc.

OK, I have to start from the beginning   so a week ago I had to go into the doctor, had acute pharyngitis, a sinus infection, and a horrid 3 day migraine. They gave me shot for my migraine and told me to take ibuprofen if it came back, I had already been taking ibuprofen and it wasn't working. They prescribed Penicillin VK 500mg, at to take it once every four hours for 10 days for the acute pharyngitis. And Mucinex D 2 twice a day for 9 days, to get rid of the sinus problem. And Lidocaine Hcl 15 ml for every 4-6 hours to help numb my throat. On top of myself being sick so has my boyfriend and daughter. A few days into the medication my ear began to hurt sooo bad, I couldn't hear. So I kept trying to pop it, big mistake, I wound up in the ER the infection and mucus from my sinus's was going up into my Eustachian tube, upon attempting to pop my ear, it trapped air between my eardrum and the mucus/infection, causing high pressure, making my eardrum convex and red, as well as my equilibrium is of giving me bad vertigo. They gave me 800mg ibuprofen, and told me to take 800mg every 8 hours to help with the pain and keep taking my medication and the Mucinex D will help push the junk out of my ear, and put my on bedrest pretty much. Once in a while I hear a crackling in my ear and it relieves some pressure, I still cant hear, but the moments I do I hear about 10%, everything is high pitched and echo-y/ now my other ear is starting to do the same thing but not as bad. A couple of days ago I started to have pain/mild itchiness in my lady-bits when I urinated and a yeasty smell, my acute pharyngitis has subsided, but my throat was still red, I double checked on it and I had little white bumps that didn't look like the acute pharyngitis. I had never had a yeast infection before and between the 5 hospital visits for myself, boyfriend, and daughter I really didn't want to go back to the hospital (which is in the next town over). So, I researched and looked all over the internet, I confirmed by pictures and symptoms I did have an yeast infection in my mouth, it is called thrush and can be easily cured my gargling 1/2 hydrogen peroxide 3% with 1/2 water for 1 minute four times daily or use apple cider vinegar. Which I have started to do and it tastes horrid but better than the yeast and its working. As for my lady-bits I got a vagisil tester kit, easy to use, lots of do's and don'ts to read. It came back and confirmed it was a yeast infection. What I didn't know and what the doctors didn't tell me or the papers they sent me home with is antibiotics also can kill your good bacteria, without that bacteria, you are more likely to get yeast infections, because the bacteria keeps your natural yeast in check. So after looking up DIY remedies and over the counter treatments I decided that I should try monistat 1. I usually would have tried a home remedy, but I was uncomfortable with the idea of sticking food products such as yogurt, cloves, and/or garlic up my lady bits, and each had about 50% success ratings. I chose over the counter, I looked at all the products, almost all of the other brands had adverse side-effects like, chemicals are known to get absorbed into the liver and never leave, and this causes liver damage, in some cases liver failure. Or possibilities like having higher accounts for allergic reactions and so on and so forth. So that's how I chose monistat. I chose the one day since it is one application that can take up to seven days to work, since I have other medications to take at differing times of the day, I thought it would be easier to take it once rather than remember to take another medication for 3-7 days. I took it late at night hoping to take it and go to sleep. I only did the insert, I ended up watching a 1 1/2 hour movie and had to urinate, the pressure caused by urinating seemed to move the medicine around and it began to itch inside and out. So i used the topical treatment that came with it, it worked but the inside was irritated, at this point it was mild, but enough to keep me awake. So I put in another movie, sure enough within a half hour the itching and burning and warmth was so intense, i felt like ice might help, or if i could get the medication out. The capsule had already released the medication. So I grabbed an apple out of my fridge and placed in against pants against my lady bit and held it there Indian style then into a birthing-type laying style. Every 15 mins or so i rotated the apple. I helped somewhat I didn't get to sleep for another 3 hours. But during that time I found similar websites to this one with similar stories, before the medication I had only went to medical sites. Upon waking up a few hours later, gooey white, thick stuff was leaking out, with a yeasty smell, no more burning or itching feelings.  To wrap things up, had I known before that this a concentrated medication and it would feel for a few hours, that an atom bomb had went off in my lady-bits I would have went with a 3-7 daily dose, not a concentrated version, but at the same time my symptoms are gone. Still dealing with my thrush and ear problems. Through all of these issues I am still exhausted and cannot hear much, but hopefully by the time all my medications are done, I will start to feel better and return to school. 

I am not someone that replies to threads like these and I realize this is pretty old, however I was having the exact same side effects: the severe burning, itching, swelling, etc. woke up around 2.30am so going to local drugstore/ dr wasn't really an option. For me after reading all the reviews, I took 2 15 minute baths in hot water... Nothing else. I also took 3 ibu profin. My pain is not gone, but the irritation has gone down tremendously. I will wait until tomorrow to decide whether it is worth seeing a dr, but alongside of the vaginal symptoms I also was very fatigued and lightheaded. Definitely will go with a pill or something much less strong next time. Thank you to all the ladies that posted encouragement on this thread- at 230am it was exactly what I needed. Good luck y'all!
