Hi, folks. My son is thirteen years old and he has fever and dry cough. His doctor recommended codeine and paracetamol as a treatment option. I would like to know something more about the side effects of these medications before I start using them. Thank you in advance for replying to my post.

Hello, there. Paracetamol is antipyretic and analgesic. However, unlike NSAIDs, it does not have anti-inflammatory effect. It is also safe for kids than other analgesic since it cannot cause Reye’s syndrome like others can. It does not affect blood coagulation. Codeine is a drug for coughing, however it has opiate characteristics. It can cause euphoria, depression, diarrhea, orthostatic hypotension, etc. It can also show withdrawal symptoms. You should be careful. I hope this helps. Bye!
