Okay - I am obviously not a very patient person. I had Spinal Fusion L4/L5 on July 6, 2009, due to Spondylolisthesis and Spondyolysis. I am home now and wondering when I will be able to do more. I can walk with my walker and get around the house. I can stand and do minimal stuff in the kitchen. However, I went for a little walk yesterday (2 blocks) and was in excruciating pain for hours after. I am wondering when I will be able to extend my length of walking and be able to do a little more.
As for pain, I am doing great. I do have some pain and tenderness in my hip area and a little down my leg. I went into the surgery with pain down the leg, so I am used to this and have faith that it will eventually go away.
I guess I am looking for someone to tell me how their recovery went as to length of time that activity increased.

Hi Joy! It sounds like you've been recovering pretty well. I had a coworker who underwent spinal fusion I think even on the same vertabrae that you did and she took a long time to get better. I think that the fact that you're even able to walk around means that you're doing better than she was at this point. It's a long recovery time so all I can post here is just support. How are you feeling today?

Thank you for the positive comments. At this point, it is 4 weeks. I am not in any pain, well... A little leg pain every once in awhile. I am actually frustrated because I feel like I can do a lot but have limitations set on me. They are not letting me return to work. NOT even for light duty. I have a pretty strenuous job, but I do not have to lift a lot. I do walk a lot at work, but they want me out for another 2 months. I guess I am not patient at all.
At this point, I walk outside with a cane, but in the house on my own. I wear a TLSO brace anytime that I am not in bed. I guess I should be happy, as you said, that I am able to do a lot at this time. Patience is the name of the game :-)

It's been a couple weeks since you've last posted. How are things going for you? are you still frustrated? are you mobile now and more active? Let me know okay?

Well, thank you for asking about my recovery. I am doing great at this point and it has been 6 weeks since surgery. I can walk at least a mile, with a little discomfort to follow. I can cook, and do cleaning in the house as long as I don't bend, twist or lift more than 5 pounds. I still wear a brace. I have been denied returning to work until I have 0 restrictions.
The frustration is the inability to drive. I feel like my recovery is going well. I will have an X-ray next week with a doctor appt. On the 26th. I am hoping for good news showing fusion of the area.
I will post more frequently how my recovery is going because I must say it has been positive and if I had to do it all over again - I would not hesitate at all.

That's great to hear! It really is awful hearing some of the stories here about people who get a procedure done and then regret it because it's so heartbreaking. To think of going through surgery like that and then not being happy with it.
Trust me, I understand your frustration on not driving. I live next to NYC and it's impossible to do. I feel helpless without a car when I'm there. But I'm glad to hear you're doing well! Keep us posted on your recovery. Thanks :)
