This is a very odd experience which has baffled me ever since I first had it as a child. It's something quite terrifying and I have found a couple of threads online where people report the same thing but none of them are particularly recent.
When I was very small (around 6-7) I had a peculiar sensation when drifting off to sleep. It's going to sound completely bizarre, but I had this weird illusion that my fingers felt overlarged and chunky yet at the same time slender and skinny. This happened after I had half-awake 'hallucinations' of delicate objects like needles, twigs and stars and then suddenly something massively chunky or thick like a mountain or a very thick book. This sharp 'contrast' of texture brought on the weird finger sensation. It completely freaked me out; I remember waking up screaming, crying and in a state of terror and had to be comforted by my parents, who attributed it to a nightmare or night terror.
I have never had an experience as vivid as that lone one, but I have experienced the 'sensation' several times throughout my life, mainly if I concentrate enough. For example if I knead a very thick book with my hands (just writing this is making me feel weird/nervous) and then hold a spindly object like a pin brings a very odd sensation which turns into a feeling of panic/dread. I experienced it last night while trying to sleep and haven't been able to relax since :(
Who else has experienced this sort of thing? It's something which has always bothered me but I shoved it at the back of my mind cause it happened so rarely. Now however, I'm becoming more and more conscious that I can make myself feel this sensation, which is giving me sleepless nights and anxiety :(
