Hi, my name is Richard and I'm starting to get a little rattled about my pending surgery. Anterior Cervical Disectomy and hip bone fusion of my disk, plus I am having two spurs filed.

From what I've been reading this is no walk in the park. Just hoping someone could shed some light as to what I should expect.

Thank You,
Richard

Hello Richard,

I too am having the same surgery next month and I am terrified about it, I am afraid of what kind of pain I am going to be in and will it be less pain then I am in now? My right arm and hand are killing me and I have been on every drug and therapy they could think of.
I am hoping the surgery goes well and that I wake up also I am hoping the collar will be somthing that will help and not make it worse.
Good luck on your sirgery I pray it goes well for you.

Hello:
I had this procedure done last August 08. I will tell you I was a bit nervous about it. But I had asked many questions and had some great answers. I asked about the surgeon that was performing the operation and nursing staff at the hosptial and other hosptials about the surgeon, I also asked other people that have had the same surgery and they all came back positive. That was step 1. Step two will rattle you a little when they actually inform you of the possible risks of this surgery. As you know ALL surgeries have inherient risks involved. There are many, but as I did I just accepted them and signed the paperwork. What choice do you have at the time. I was in extreme pain 24/7 with no relief. My surgery had complications, they cut my carotid artery and I lost 2 liters of blood. Because of the cut and emergency resection of the carotid artery I could not be completely fused. I did have anograph surgery (this surgeon does not use bone from your hip or other areas as he feels you will need to recoperate from the fusion why worry about another op site) with no plate. My recovery was longer but the pain relief was instant. When I woke from surgery I was asked if I had any pain or tingling left. It was all gone. I did spend 12 weeks in the collar, although 8 weeks was all i wa suppose to be in it but I could not get to see the doctor after the 8 week time frame. I was operated on Friday the 22nd and was headed home on the 24th. I was up and walking and standing on the football field with my sons team on the 25th (I was suppose to be resting but I can not sit still :-) ) . I did walk and exercise as much as I could. It took me 9 months to fully recoperate and be able to rejoin the workforce as a paramedic. Because I was not plated and only grafted in one area of the the damage I will need to go back for another surgery someday, I will not hesitate to go again. I hope my story helps. I hope yours goes smoother than mine and you only have the minimal amount of down time. BTW I have been able to skate, run and do whatever I want now. I have some recurring pain and soem recurring numbness but I was told to expect that since they were not able to complete. I do have one other side effect that others seem to have, that is soemtimes when I turn my head there is a loud crack sound in my neck that will almost drop me to my knees with pain but it only lasts for a few seconds. Good luck and god speed......
