I had severe headache that persisted 3 days before was diagnosed as trigeminal neuralgia. I got tegertol and it relieved me from pain in about next 24 hours. I know that this medication is used in treatment of manic depressive disorders and mania. I know that persons on antipsychotics suffer very bad side effects of these drugs. What can I expect to occur as the side effects of tegertole that I was using for 7 days?

Main indication of tegretol is treatment of bipolar disorders and acute mania, but it has been shown as very effective in trigeminal neuralgia. I used carbamazepine when had severe one side facial pain caused by neuralgia of nerve trigeminus. As it was short term therapy I developed side effects that were related to initial doses and adjustment of the organism. What I experienced were nausea, drowsiness and several times even diplopia occurred. More serious side effects of carbamazepine-tegretol are related to chronic use of the medication in psychic disorders.
