This sounds like something called Vestibulitis. It is an over sentivity of a group of glands in your vulva, one of them being the uretha (where you pee from). I have exactly the same symptons and was diagnosed with Vestibulitis a couple weeks ago. I would go and see your doctor for advice, although ive been told theres not much they can do apart from change my diet to stop the urge to urinate. They may do some tests to rule out anything else, such as sti's and infections first before diagnosing you. but it definately sounds like thats what you have.

This is late but I think this will be helpful for people having this issue in the future.

It’s not a result of breaking your hymen, if you did, you likely would have felt it and doing so doesn’t initiate the urge to urinate.

The same thing actually happened to me today - my period was looking about medium flow and I opted to use a regular sized tampon because my second day is typically one of the heaviest. It wasn’t and I had a dry tampon in while I went for an hour and a half long walk. The moment something went awry, I think, is when I chaffed my urethra removing the still-partially dry tampon four hours later, because, let’s be honest, a tampon being a feeling a little dry for 5-15 minutes is hardly cause for concern.

My initial fear was that I’ve contracted a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) but, seeing as I’ve had a few in the past, the sensation of urinating was not painful or uncomfortable - and just had the strong urge to pee frequently. So that is at least partially ruled out; my timeline is, being that I’ve had the problem for roughly 12 hours (the time currently being 3:36 AM) that if by tomorrow at noontime, I’m still having issues or the intervals between trips to the bathroom is not decreasing - I will take myself to an urgent care for a UTI Urine sample.

Thankfully, in the last five hours, the intervals have gotten longer and the urge is subsiding somewhat which has led me to suspect that what happened was simply having irritated the urethra when removing the tampon. I’ve been using pads for the rest of the day but I feel that I’m not producing enough lubricant to keep more chaffing to continuing.

My best advice to anyone else in a similar situation is just to monitor yourself and try not to fret.

It’s important to monitor the rate at which you’re using the restroom and how much liquid you’re passing. Avoid caffeine and alcohol but don’t try to limit how much water you are drinking as that can lead to other health developments.

The reason why I want to encourage others not to fret is because doing so can disrupt the flow of your period or delay it. For example, I’ve been having a really stressful time lately and my last couple periods have spotty and inconsistent as a result - which is not unusual for me and has happened in the past without (other) health related causes.

I think the other comment has a really good point for if you’re suddenly experiencing the urge to pee without an explanation but if you can put it down to removing a tampon or having irritated your urinary system or bladder, then there are likely to be other causes.

A quick update: at the current time (7:25 AM) I am no longer having frequent (or constant) urges to urinate. I was able to get a few hours of rest in and am, for once, thankful to be unemployed so I can sleep in.

The one thing that did help was removing the maxi-pad that I had been using for the night. With my inconsistent blood flow, which since yesterday morning has been waning more and more, I believed it was wicking away too much moisture to remain lubricated and comfortable. If you’re bleeding heavier, this shouldn’t be an issue but if you feel yourself becoming dry, be advised to switch over to a pantyliner or something less heavy-duty.

I have no other symptoms still, at this point. No pain or otherwise discomfort while urinating. I might be a little dehydrated and thus plan to have a nice, refreshing drink of water before turning back to bed.
