Your numbers need to stay in between 2 and 3. If you test less than 2 that means you blood is too THICK and if it is above 3 then your blood is too THIN. When your blood is too thick you can form a clot. I am on coumadin because I have a clotting disorder and have clots in my lungs and legs. Goodluck to you.

This "guest" has a name. I am Joe and 54 years old. I am on my second series or warfarin for a second cardio ablation that will be taking place 7/11/13. The first ablation that was done 9/4/12 didn't quite fix me, so hopefully this will be the charm. Through all of this the doctors have not found any blockage of any kind or clotting issues, just a pesky atrial flutter. I did the first warfarin series dry, without any beer, which I love. It sucked for 6 months, so this time I decided to listen to the consistency crowd and held myself to four (4) beers a day, before I started taking warfarin this time, and four (4) beers a day while I am on it. They also had me on 80mg Aspirin therapy, in conjunction of starting the warfarin. Instructions about the Aspirin is to discontinue it when my INR is over two (2). Today my INR was two point five (2.5), so I will discontinue the Aspirin. I intend to have my usual  four (4) beers and promise not to have an accident, just stay at home and relax from life.

Am I a train wreck about to happen?

Has your diet changed any? Have you introduced more Vitamin K enriched foods, more than normal? I have been on Warfarin therapy since 2006, and will be on it for life. I have to watch my diet and make sure that my green leafy veggies are the same amount each day.

I had to respond to you because that is exactly what I have and I've never heard of anyone else having it. I'm a lot older than you, I'm 6l and was diagnosed at 49 after I had a brain hemorrage due to a blood clot.My experience has been if I drink more than a couple my INR goes up so I'm not an expert but my guess would be that beer might help your inr to help to get into range. Good luck to you!

I'm worried about my Mom she's 82 on warfarin drinks 8oz of wine a day her blood test are weekly and they keep changing her doses higher 7mg a day now.  Is the wine effecting her test I know that her diet is low in Vitamin K.

My wife is on coumadin for a mutated prothrombin gene.It caused her carotid artery to bisect, causing a clot in her neck.7 embolic(90% fatality rate in the 1st month following this particular kind of stroke) strokes later, she has been stroke free for going on 4 months.Doctors are concerned because after her 1st stroke, she was put on coumadin(warfarin) and plavix. And she still had strokes despite meds. That shouldn't happen. So she's going to Johns Hopkins in September. It all started when she decided to quit smoking with the help of Chantix.Exactly one month to the day after her first dose, the strokes began.I would say that a few drinks on occasion is much safer than the Chantix.Doctors are saying that "it just happens sometimes"with the bisection in her carotid, and are shying away from making the connection to Chantix.Drug companies give doctors vacations, and $$ to peddle their pills. The commercial for Chantix says"stop use and contact emergency personnel immediately if you have signs of stroke"The doctor who prescibed it said"there is no link between Chantix and stroke",and blamed the mutated gene.Well your jugular vein tearing"just happens" I call BS.But a different doctor(hemotologist) found the mutated gene. And there may be others, but to find out, shemd have to stop coumadin to perform the tests, increasing her risk of another stoke. So he just said coumadin for life. The problem we have with that is that warfarin is actually rat poison. It makes her feel bad,as rat poison logically would. So we are hoping Johns hopkins has an answer for us,that could get her off this terrible medication.

Who is this Dr. who said you're allowed to drink at all? There are laws and ethics that all Dr's. follow and I've never known any Dr. to say it's ok to drink if you're 16. If it's necessary for you to drink at 16 and you're already on blood thinners, you might want to think before you drink anything alcoholic.

I take 7.5 mg of warfarin daily and have an INR about 2.8.
Beer AND wine lowers INR to 2. Which is bad for me. Hard liquor doesn't bother it.

I have been taking Coumadin for almost 25 years since having a stroke. I don't stress out very much about my INR numbers unless they go too far out of range either way. My doctor has always told me that if there's something I want to eat or drink that affects my INR, I just need to be consistent and find the right dosage to keep my INR within my therapeutic range. Keep in mind that it takes awhile for any change in dosage to take effect so you don't want to test your blood too often.
