My father was complaining of sharp chest pain for few months. Finely he went to doctor and he told him that maybe it’s Pericarditis. Now he will need to go to specialist and do echocardiogram. I’m worried a lot, of course. I don’t know anything about this illness. What is Pericarditis?

Pericarditis is a swelling and irritation of the pericardium, the thin sac-like membrane that surrounds your heart. It can be acute or chronic. Acute pericarditis is more common than chronic pericarditis, and can occur as a complication of infections, immunologic conditions, or heart attack. Mild cases of pericarditis may get better on their own without treatment.
