My mother has started to take atnolol because of coronary artery disease that she was diagnosed a month ago. She is 56 and I guess that her artery disease occurred in association with menopausal changes in organism. I would like to hear some facts about taking atnolol, like what time of the day is the best for its use, should it be taken before or after meal etc. I think that it can be important for efficacy of the therapy. Is there a food that should be avoided to be taken along with atnolol? Thanks in advance.

Atenolol should be taken at bedtime or before meal, I know that because my husband has been on atenolol for last 4 years. As I know, some drugs interact with atenolol and can decrease its bioavailability and efficacy. Ampicilin belongs into this group, and also calcium channel blockers or antiarrhytmic drugs, lowering heart rate and bp can happen when these drugs are administered together. I think that drugs like antacids and statins should be avoided to combine with other medications and atenolol too, because have increased risk of interaction.
