I am so tired of reading that. MOVIE ENDING INCLUDED..... Open Water, The Perfect Storm. I watched Open Water last night. In the end, the 2 people involved in the movie die. I previously watched The Perfect Storm, where again, everydody dies. The only thing they know about Open Water is that the 2 people did not get back on the boat after a dive. All the rest is BS. The Perfect Storm. All they know is the boat was lost in the storm, everything else is BS. I know the directors take liberties when they don't know the whole story, but it cannot be based on a true story unless you know at least SOME of the facts. One fact, they were lost, is not enough to make up the rest of the story and then say it is based on a true story. If that is the case, they can say that about anything. A dog was left behind when the family moved never to be seen again. Make up a really heroic tale of how the dog tried to find its owners and "Based on a true story." Enough already. Just say completely made up. Sheldon

Where was "Open Water" to have been based? I know that last January (I think, it could have been December because we were so messed up with the move) two divers down here were left in the water. One was found by the Coast Guard the next day. His girlfriend was never found, but her gear was found a few weeks later. I don't know all of the details, but it sounded pretty scary to me. They were visiting here from New England (I forget which state).
I believe that they were out by Alligator Reef (about 3 miles out on the Atlantic side, in Islamorada).
I understand that was not the point of your post; there are too many liberties taken in the name of producing a movie, and the more dramatic the story, the more it sells. The "based on a true story" contributes to the drama.
However, I am now wondering if "Open Water" was based on the event I described above.

Don't start a thread and put a movie "spoiler" on the second line. Give some warning before you say that everyone dies. In not one but two movies.... yeesh.

According to imdb:

The film is inspired by the 1998 disappearance of Tom and Eileen Lonergan, who were left behind by their diving boat off the coast of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
