My father was affected by colic cramps few days ago. It was very painful; we had to take him to the hospital. Doctor put him on bentyl, 4 times a day. Now he is waiting for the results of the exams, to see if he has to have the operation. Bentyl obviously helps, but I don’t know for how long. Can you tell me more facts about that medication? Thanks.

Bentyl is indicated in colic and bladder spasms, diverticulosis and in IBS too. It works by relaxing muscles and relieves spasms. Bentyl also decreases amount of stomach acid produced, which is also important in such disorders. It is safe to take bentyl for a long term, especially as you said that your father is under the supervision, at the hospital. Bentyl should be taken before meal, and not with antacids.
