I had ACDF in Sept 05, C-5,C-6, and was told by my surgeon that smoking decreases the bone healing process.
I thought ya right...every doctor is going to say "quit smoking". I continued smoking however I did cut down.
After doing extensive research on this type of surgery I have discovered several things. One, do not take ibuprophen or aspirin products. Two, smoking DOES slow down the healing process. Especially since in the healing is taking place throat area where of course the nictone is going to pass.
So for your answer...quitting would be a great benefit. If you can't quit then cut down as much as you can.
This was a tough surgery for me and not a huge sucess either.
So have patience. Take time to let yourself heal.
I wish you a speedy recovery!
