My father has to take codone because of severe cough. As I know there is something in common for codone and morphine. He does not suffer pain and has almost never needed to take analgesics before. Please tell me more about codone.

Codeine is opioid analgesic that is found in opium, like morphine. It is indicated in management of cough, especially non-productive, because only that kind of cough should be suppressed. Codeine is also used as analgesic in treatment of mild to moderate pain and usually in combination with acetaminophen or aspirin. It is less potent pain killer than morphine and with less risk for development of drug dependence. Its most serious adverse effect is respiratory depression that can occur in overdosing.
