Hi. My sister have lupus. She took the LE cell test. It was negative. Then, she took immunofluorescent antinuclear antibody test and it was positive. But the doctor said that she has lupus. Like, her diagnoses was confirmed. Is there some other test that she could take to check it all out? One test was negative, and the other one was positive, I doubt that she has lupus at all.

Hi. Confirmed diagnosis of lupus? Lupus is very had to confirm. LE cell test is the first laboratory test ever devised. When repeated, it is eventually positive in about 90 percent of the people with systemic lupus. This test is not specific for SL and is rarely used. It can also be positive in some people with rheumatic conditions or liver disease. The ANA test is more specific for lupus. If ANA is negative it is a normal result, and it is very good evidence against lupus. Even a positive ANA test is not a proof of lupus. Anyway, there are some tests of individual antigen antibody reactions. They are very helpful in the diagnosis of SLE (including the anti-DNA antibody test, the anti-Sm antibody test, the anti-RNP antibody test, etc).
