Working on new ways of treatment for COPD has been neglected in the past but things seem to be changing for better today.
The treatment for COPD include slowing the accelerated decline in lung function; relieving symptoms, such as shortness of breath and cough; improving daily lung function; decreasing exacerbations; and improving quality of life.
There are some medications that are used to relieve the symptoms of COPD and to treat respiratory tract infections that can worsen COPD.
It has been found that different medications combined are successful in treating COPD.
For instance, bronchodilators relax the muscles around the bronchi to allow easier breathing by relieving a bronchospasm.
Furthermore, there are anticholinergic medications work via part of the parasympathetic nervous system, which controls airway size. Currently, the leading anticholinergic medications are ATROVENT and COMBIVENT.
