Hello! My son is using prednisone as a part of his asthma treatment. He is carefully observed by his doctor and his asthma is under control. Last time when we were on his regular check up his doctor recommended eye check. He also asked if we had glaucoma in our family history. My son has no problems with his eyesight and has no headaches at all. Could corticosteroids cause glaucoma?

Hello! Long-term use of prednisone can cause glaucoma. There are no visible symptoms at the beginning and when symptoms such as the loss of side vision occur the disease has progressed considerably and can lead to permanent vision loss. Your son should have regular eye examine including a glaucoma test. Of course it doesn’t mean he ill develop glaucoma only because he is taking corticosteroids. It means he is at higher risk and he need to be monitored more often.

I was diagnosed with cataracts last December and when I was diagnosed, the doctor asked if I ever was on steroids for a long period of time. I had told her that I was on Flonase for 5 years. She seems to believe it was due to the Flonase. I am on 39 and bummed this could happen.
