I started the depo shot Aug 1999. Sep 2015 I was diagnosed with pulmonary embolisms and was forced to stop all birth control. May 2016 my period came back after 16 years of no period. However it wouldn't stop so I went to the doctor. Sep 2016 I had to gave a D&C and a Hysteroctopy to stop the bleeding. I am being checked for Endometrial Cancer and have a 2nd procedure set up for Oct 2016 for an ablation. If the results from the biopsy show Endometrial Cancer then I have to have a Hysterectomy instead of an ablation. The shot Really messed up my body but Now it's too late. I Thought it was my Best Friend for taking away my cramps and period. But instead it stole 17yrs of my life. I am 100% Permanent and Total through VA and on Social Security Disability. Please Don't let Anyone take this shot. I am Truly a Lifetime movie waiting to be written. But I Have to Live It!!

Mine is getting better. ... I still just don't feel like myself. I have so many blue veins popping out in my chest thar if I hadn't had TWO blood tests and and ultrasound, I would still think I had to be pregnant. I haven't had a period yet but they did put me on birth control to try and trigger a normal cycle. I still have some dizziness and nausea but nothing like those forst two weeks. I am in about week 7 of fighting the symptoms. Hang in there .....

Hi Alyssa.. I had been on depo too for almost 2 years and decided to stop my shot last August 1st week. So it was 2 months since my supposed shot when i started to bleed (Oct.1,2016). Its been 7 days already that i am bleeding like a faucet and its a total uncontrollable. I cannot go out side to work on field because of my heavy menstruation. I dont know what to do. I don't know where all these bloods coming from. I use napkin pants at night to lessen my misery. I am having headache all day sometimes migraine. I feel annoyed and sad. I just want to get back my normal hormones. I don't want to bleed for 3 mos.

Ladies! I know my comment is late, but I was on depoprovera for 15 years, taking it for PMDD. Got off because I missed a shot and was in the beginning of menopause, and my insurance was starting to not pay for it. So I stopped cold turkey.
The withdrawal was like PMDD on steroids! Emotional and physical aches and pains. And it lasted nearly a year. Ibuprofen helped with most of the aches.
Although, I was taking depoprovera for sanity's sake, I might still consider it as an alternative to the extreme PMS symptoms that my family and I had to endure. My life during those 15 years had more balance than I had ever experienced since I was 12 years old. So, there are benefits outside of birth control. But the positive has to outweigh the negative.
BUT YES WITHDRAWAL FROM DEPOPROVERA IS VERY VERY REAL! Just be educated.

I was on depo for seven years and have only been off of it for three months now. My doctor told me that most women take six to eight months to get their period back and some it takes up to two years. She also told me that withdrawal symptoms can too last this long and often they mimic those same symptoms of pregnancy. One month after coming off I began experiencing symptoms. My breasts are extremely sore and tender particularly during the night time, so much so that I will often wake up during the night in pain. The other main symptom I experience is nausea which is pretty severe and has been daily for the past two months with no sign of any relief! As for anxiety I cannot remember back seven years ago as to whether or not I was an anxious person then, but I have suffered with anxiety for the past three years which is a huge reason for me coming off the depo, but it is most likely a common side effect of depo withdrawal too. Rest assured your symptoms will be from the depo injection! Hopefully things clear up soon :)

February 2016 was my last shot. I had only had 3 shots. I just recently got my period & I've been bleeding for almost a week straight. I've been experiencing shortness of breath & chest tightness. My doctor said it had to do with me getting my period back & it's possibly anxiety. How long until I'm back to my normal self?

That really freaks me out, there is no way i'm getting another shot (due in 10 days). I had chest tightness and shortness of breath too, went to the doctor and she told me I am just breathing wrong!! Seriously? So mad that they do this to us and then offer no help. The Doc said there was nothing she could do for me, no medication will help. I have lost faith in the medical profession. It really sucks that you are still having all these symptoms after stopping shot so long ago. I'm going to try a product called Calcium D Glucarate, which detoxs you and gets hormones back to normal and eradicates steroids and other things that shouldn't be in your system. I have also found magnesium to be a lifesaver while on depo, helps with the anxiety attacks etc. helps with sleep and energy levels too. I think you have to stop relying on doctors who got you into this mess and do some research for yourself to find natural remedies. I hope this helps, and god help me!! Depo is a nightmare ;(

Just thought it might be worth mentioning, 5 months after first and only injection, the shot seems to be completely out of my system, all side effects are gone, have had two periods within the space of a month which I was rather glad of, seeing as some people have none for months even after stopping the injection, and which is in part attributable to the use of maca root, for help regulating hormones.

I have been on the shot for 10 years and currently trying to decide if I should get off of it. Did the depo cause your pulmonary embolism?

Hi
I skipped my 3 do injection today to the mood swings and depression I suffered from last month , I feel very dizzy and disorientated to the point I crushed my neighbour car , is very hard to cope with the withdrawal symptoms !!
I been told by a Moroccan doctor that do injection are used for mentally ill pp over there , that's shocked me loads .
I was prescribed patches this time Finger crossed . From my experience I wouldn't advice any women to use DO INJECTION .
Hope u lol feel better
