Does alcohol effect the effectiveness of an antibiotic?

Loading...

Drinking while on antibiotics is basically never ADVISED. Most antibiotics are still just as effective if you do drink alcohol, but using alcohol while using them may make you feel sicker, and it reduces your general immune system strength, which you don't want when you already have an infection.

Some antibiotics do have reduced efficacy if you combine them with alcohol. Doxycycline is one example of such antibiotics.

Anyway, unless your course goes on for a very long time, just stay away from the booze altogether. If you are taking antibiotics long term, ask your doctor and then follow their instructions.
