All my life I have struggled with depression, feelings of inadequacy, lack of attachment to family members. I learned that when I was two, during a bout with some illness, I became dangerously dehydrated. I was hospitalized for several days where I was give IV fluids, tied to the bed, and isolated from my family. Evidently I suffered a lot of pain - IV needles in the 1950's were adult-sized and had to be inserted into my thigh.
I'm a functioning adult, but I can't help wondering what effect this experience had on me, combined with a family dysfunction of a stern and distant father and a narcissistic mother.
Is there something I can read or refer to? I want to understand.
