Esophagus is the tube that connects the mouth and stomach and difficulty swallowing and acid reflux are just two of the conditions related to it. Older people, just like your mother, are particularly susceptible to a number of disorders related to the esophagus. Dysphagia-difficulty swallowing affects up to 30% of the elderly population and any part of the swallowing process can be affected by aging or disease. All of this result in dysphagia. Tumors of the central nervous system that control swallow functions can also cause a dysphagia and also tumors of the mouth, throat and esophagus. Treatment depends on the cause of dysphagia and the structures involved and it may include physical therapy exercises to relearn swallowing processes, surgery, medication and other therapies. It is nice to hear that your mother is ok.
