I had a prostate of over 200. My surgery was in 2018 at age 73 so the procedure may have changed. When I came to I had a large catheter in me. It was definitely uncomfortable. I had to stay overnight and was released by noon on the next day. I had incontinence for about 8 months. The one thing I should have done is bring my own paper underwear and pad. I had NO CONTROL when I left the hospital. Even today I can still leak a drop or two when lifting something heavy.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

You will be amazed how well it goes. You will wake up with a large catheter which will be rather uncomfortable to say the least --- but only overnight. During the night you will have a bladder irrigation going to wash out any blood clots before they block things off. Hint: Occasionally turn slightly to the side of the catheter to allow the fluid to fun downhill through the catheter --- that should help you from feeling full. If you feel full and you see no fluid in the catheter then let the nurse know as they might need to irrigate it to get things going. The catheter will be taken out the next morning and after you urinate a good volume (which will not be hard to do) you will be discharged. Hint: take the hospital urinal home with you! You probably will not shoot straight immediately after surgery and the urinal helps avoid a mess. Don't be alarmed -- you will have bloody urine and some clots initially. Also have some incontinence briefs (best) or at least pads --- you can buy those anywhere. Keep you fluids intake on the high side to keep the clots flushed out of your bladder. I had absolutely no discomfort after the catheter came out.

I forgot to mention that I expect you will have no problem with sexual performance, although I did find the lack of ejaculation sensation a bit of a let down.

Thank you for the encouraging reply. My surgery is in the morning. I have a catheter for two weeks and am so ready for this to be behind me. Blessings.

Have HoLep surgery. Very good satisfaction rate.

Looks like the reverse climax is the main let down. But I reckon it’s a trade off. So there is a climax, but dry? How does that feel? How soon after your procedure were you able to have sex? It’s been three weeks since I have been with my wife due to this catheter, that I am dreaming about it-lol.

For me climax does involve the contraction sensations, but does not have the sensations that accompany and follow the contractions (ie: of the seminal fluid being ejaculated and the after glow associated with it). The whole sensation experience seems to fade away at the end rather than finish with the afore mentioned sensations. Sometimes I actually feel like I ejaculate but no fluid comes out. That said, No worries --- you will derive satisfaction and also be able to do a good job satisfying your wife. I am not sure if my wife misses the warm feel of ejaculation but she claims and acts as if she does not and it certainly makes things less messy. The doctor will say when you can have sex. I did everything by the book. PS: Be sure to do your keigel exercises --- that will help any incontinence issues. Don't worry --- be happy --- You are going to feel much better soon.

The brochure says I can have sex in 2 weeks as long as there is no blood in the urine. That sounds pretty quick. I appreciate your words of encouragement.

I had HoLEP surgery yesterday with Dr Tayeb of Baylor, Scott, & White in Temple, TX, for a 177 gram prostate and complete blockage. Was in a catheter two weeks before surgery. Everything went great. No pain. My only issue is I don't really have a sense when I need to pee and urine comes out on its own like I have little control. I already made a mess. I will wear depends, pads, etc., but wonder how long this may last and if I wil wet the bed when sleeping since so much urine seems to want to flow at night.

You should talk with your doctor’s office regarding incontinence. In my case the surgery went well taking less than predicted time. I was 72 at the time. The day after surgery I had no control. I had to wear paper underwear and a pad. The good news is that 2 weeks later I was on the road for a major trip. I slowly retained control and reduced down to a shield. Generally I don’t need anything now but it took me 8 months to get to this point.

Has anyone talked to you about Kegel exercises to help regarding control?

That's encouraging. What about when you slept at night? Did the pad or depends ever overflow? At present I don't even have an urge to pee. It just happens. My procedure was yesterday, so I am trying to figure out what to expect. Yes, Kegel exercises were recommended. Thanks.

I was advised to not drink anything 2 hours before bed time and of course emptying before bed. I don’t remember overflowing at night. Be sure you drink a healthy amount of fluids. Be sure and do your Kegels. They really do help! You will also experience urgency as you heal.

I should say that the time for healing is dependent on many factors. These include your age, the length or the surgery, amount of prostate left around the bladder exit and when you started doing Kegels. My doctor took virtually all the prostate at the bladder neck. Other doctors leave some prostate tissue at the bladder neck. This can help regain control. I started exercises before my surgery so I head a head start on my recovery.
