Oh man you just gave me a flashback. I started having the morning missiles on day 2 of 4 in the hospital after my HOLEP. Catheter was still in, with scabbing at the urethra around the catheter. I was in agony...thank God I remembered the deep breathing and relaxation exercises to retract that bad boy back to normal.

All the best to you Klink on 11/20. I will be anxiously awaiting your outcome and have full faith all will turn out well for you. Good things happen to good people. I turn 62 on 11/18 and a great gift for me would be a good outcome for you on the 20th (and me in December of course)! ;)

Thanks much for the kind words Blayneb!!!! Enjoy your birthday ( I recently had my 59th LOL ) and am actually counting down the days to the surgery. Tired of carrying catheters with me and using them 5 times a day to void. I will document the whole surgical experience and let you know how things go!

I have just had a Holep, less that five days ago. I am glad the procedure was a success and it is very encouraging for me to hear it. I am looking for people such as yourself to whom I may be able to ask questions to, particularly about your level of discomfort in the week/s following the procedure, especially in frequency/urgency and any other symptoms you may have felt and what you did to alleviate the symptoms. I'd be grateful for any information you have about this. Angel

I believe that you will find that any discomfort disappears quickly. In my case, after having 85+ GM removed from my 120gm prostate, I did experience frequency/urgency issues for a few months. My regular urologist prescribed VESIcare which controlled the issue very well. After a couple of months, I began experimenting with increasing the interval between doses, until I was able to go completely off of it. I'm now 19 months post HoLEP and still think having the procedure was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I had Holep procedure five days ago. I would be happy for any information from anyone who experienced urgency/frequency of urination and nucturia, and how long it took them to recover from these symptoms. Thanks.

I had the Holep last December,so about 11 months ago, at age 79. I had had several painful urinary retention episodes requiring ER insertion of a catheter. After the Holep, I spent one night in the hospital, then went home. For a week or two I had blood in my urine and some slight burning on urinating, but that ended. I now experience no pain on urination. I wore a pad until a month ago. Really, I no longer needed it after four months or so but psychologically I wasn't ready to do without a pad. Now, perhaps once every few weeks I have a small leak, but it's not much of a problem. I don't sleep straight through the night but that may be due to other causes. I pee easily with a good stream and no pain. My surgeon assured me I would not experience urinary retention any more, which was my objective in having the Holep. I am very happy with the result. I appreciate this website and all the good help it provides.

Hi Ramesh. How long did the symptoms of urgency/frequency last after the operation?

Hi Fuel59. How long did the feelings of urgency/frequency last for exactly. Did it settle down progressively during those two months, or did it happen fairly quickly at the end of the period. Any advice gratefullt accepted.

In total probably 6 months, and it was progressive. The VESIcare made a dramatic and immediate improvement. I probably went a month, maybe two before starting vesicare, and really needed to wear protective pads "just in case". Vesicare gave me control until my body relearned what it was supposed to be doing.

Update: almost 8 week’s post op, Not doing as well as I hoped at this time, I am still leaking and having trouble controlling my ergency to urinate. I have had a couple of “accidents”, I sometimes simply stand up after sitting and get a burning ergency to urinate, sometimes I can control it sometimes I can’t stop the urge and my bladder just lets go! Some times just dropping my pants and bending to sit I start urinating, usually on myself! Any advice ?
Only good news is (at this point) is NO retro ejaculation which was a surprise since the surgeon assured me that retro ejaculation happens almost all the time with removing that much tissue. I just hope as time passes I can return to a normal life and not worry about finding a rest room in time.

Who has used the services of Dr Nicole L. Miller at Vanderbilt Urology/University??  I would like to hear any positive or negative feedback regarding this doctor, as she is one of the doctors at the top of my list for Holep surgery.  Thank you

You should be fine, I too had this for a while but eventually, it gets better. Good news on the retro front though.
