What kind of incontinence wear should I have available immediately post-op HoLEP?

Surgery is next Wednesday and I have no idea what my situation will be post-op.

From experience what would you recommend for me to have on hand?

Thanks, Philip

Phillip,
I’m usuin Depend Real Fit. They are as good as anything, I guess. Good luck with your surgery. You will be glad you did it.

I suggest buying one package of Depend for Men Guards Maximum Absorbency, and taking 4 individual units times the number of days you will be away from home counting from the day of your surgery. Leave the rest of the package at home to use when you return. As I recall (it's been a year since I've needed them), there are 52 units in one package. I used that brand and found they worked well.

Let me add one more thing to my previous suggestion of using Depend for Men Guards: Be sure to attach them to snug fitting boxer briefs, not looser types of underwear, to prevent leaking and assure a continuing good fit of the pad. I used Depend Max Absorbency pads when I had my Holep with Dr. Lingemann a year ago and they worked well for me. Best of luck to you. I hope the surgery works as well for you as it did for me.

Briefs. My surgery was 3 weeks ago. I started with 2 during the day and 1 at night. I now get by with 1 during the day and then change into a clean 1 for the night.

Thanks Philip, I called his nurse a week ago. I believe she said ultrasound of the prostate and think she said cytoscope and something else. I forgot, I am too embarrased to call again lol. I did not see they had an e-mail adress, that I could ask those questions.

Philip,
I think I may have confused you with my previous posts. Let me try to be clearer: you have two ways to go with containing incontinent urination: 1)you can wear special men's underwear made of special material that keeps liquid (=urine) in. They fit tightly with elastic around your upper leg. Depend makes them and they come around 20 to a pack. I think other manufactures also make them. You change to a new one as needed and throw out the soiled one.
2) you can wear ordinary snug men's briefs that men without incontinence problems also wear, but you would add specially made absorbent pads with one sticky side you attach to the inside front of the briefs. Depend also makes those and so do other manufacturers. If you attach them properly, when you pee, the pad will absorb the urine and your briefs should stay dry (though sometimes some urine may leak out). Of course you change the pads as needed and different packs are available in various thicknesses of absorbency depending on how incontinent you are.
I tried both alternatives before I had Holep. I didn't like the special men's underwear because they made me sweat uncomfortably in the covered area due, I suppose, to not letting air through. Apparently some men find them ok. I much preferred the second alternative. So it's your choice. You may want to buy a pack of each type and see what works best for you.
Again, I wish you the best.

Below is a copy of the correspondence that I had with Dr Lingeman's office ----- that should help you.
I had to delete the email address because this site does not allow them for some strange reason --- which is a big inconvenience --- everyone needs to move along with technological advances. You can find the email address online by googling Dr. Linegman.
Anyway, you should not be too embarrassed to call about anything. Just apologize for not having perfect memory and get the job done. It will be worth it.

Greetings Philip _____,
We received your letter today in regards to your interest in the HoLEP procedure that Dr. Lingeman performs.
To begin the process you will need to have all of your urologic records along with a copy of the front and back of your insurance card faxed to us at *** removed ***. We will have Dr. Lingeman review the records and make sure that this surgery will benefit you and we will call your insurance company to make sure you will be covered if you come here for surgery. The information Dr. Lingeman will be interested in include the size of your prostate that was either measured by prostate ultrasound or a CT of the pelvis, Ultrasounds of the bladder showing how well you are emptying your bladder, PSA results, any biopsy reports if you have had biopsies, urine cultures if you have a history of urinary tract infections or prostatitis, if your local urologist did a cystoscopy then he will want that report and his latest office note.
If it is decided to proceed with surgery then we would try to do everything in one trip. We would see you in the office on a Tuesday. You would stay in a hotel Tuesday evening and we would perform the surgery on Wednesday. You will spend one night in the hospital. When you wake up from the surgery you have a catheter in. We will remove that Thursday morning and once you can urinate twice on your own then you are discharged from the hospital. We would like for you to stay in town Thursday night. Dr. Lingeman will have you call me Friday morning. If everything is normal and you do not have any questions then you can plan on traveling home Friday afternoon.
When we have a surgery date and time then I will send you an entire packet with surgical information, hotel information and order for blood work, EKG and urine culture to be done locally. We will discuss details at that point. Right now we are scheduling the last week of September.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Watkins

Thanks Philip, that helped me a lot. I am going to se my local URO on Jan 31 for my 6 month check up I told them I wanted a Ultrasound on the prostate and Cytoscopy at that time. They told me I could not do them at that time., due to no room for it, I had to see the doctor first and then order those tests, and do them another time.Does that sound reasonable??

Sounds good.
I would not hesitate to call them if you have more questions. They don't bite.

Can't believe they even removed public phone # contact information from my post.

Best wishes to you, Philip

It is now 31 days post Holep (12/18 with Dr Das at Jefferson Hospital in Philly). I so far have what I'd call mixed results. THE GOOD: My urine flow is very good and I seem to empty pretty well as I can go hours between the need to urinate. I urinate with very strong force, especially when my bladder is full. I can sleep at night up to 7 hours or so with out the urge to go. However when I do get the urge (night or day) it is sudden and very strong and I usually have only a short time to get to a toilet.

THE BAD: I still see blood. At the end of every urination I have drops of blood (and some small chunks) that occur when I drain my johnson to get the last few drops out. Has anyone else gone 4 weeks + and still seen blood? I would be appreciative if you shared your experience.

Incontinence has been quite bothersome. If I am inactive, or sleeping at night, I dribble minimally however if I am active to any extent, I dribble and squirt a lot, to the point that during any day I expect to be active I am now wearing heavier surge type depends pads as opposed to the light CVS pads I wear otherwise. Some days I have to change those heavier surge type depends pads  2 or more times. My crotch always feels wet on those days which is very hard to get used to. I want to be more active but this is making my life quite miserable to be frank. Again I'd appreciate any words of encouragement on that front. I know 80% of HoLEP patients regain their continence within 3 months. I am just hoping I will be in that group or close to it, but I have yet to see any progress to indicate that may happen, even though I do kegels religiously and had done them for quite a while pre-HoLEP.

Klink if you are still on this board, how have you been doing? I know you are about a month ahead of me and I am hoping you are seeing some improvement. I know you were having difficulty.

My thanks to anyone who can share their experiences and any encouragement (to be honest patience is not my strong suit), and I will continue to keep everyone updated as things progress.

Blayneb,
I’m on bloodthinners so after the first 2 weeks I was taking them again and the bleeding came back so I called and was told to stop them again. The bleeding stopped the next day and so 4 days later I had an appointment with my heart Doc because I have a-fib and after 2 days started seeing a little blood again. My heart Doc told me if I started bleeding again I might have to have another proceedure to get me off the blood thinners. I’m going to give this another week to see if the blood finally stops because this time iit comes and go’s.
During the day when I’m more active Ihave the same problems as you with the peeing. Some days Are better than others with the little squirts. I’m still wearing the diapers because I’m not sure of myself yet. I like you hope this keeps improving.
