Sex, the first few times, is often very clumsy and yes, it can hurt the woman.
The tissues in the vagina are not used to being stretched. Her hymen may also tear. The trauma to the tissues can cause pain and discomfort, sometimes for several days.
Foreplay and lube are your friend. Make sure she is very wet and use additional lube if available, KY Jelly for example. It can help. Take your time penetrating and don't try to go very deep at first. Go slow.
