I didn't see this squat suggestion. But what I figured out is
using a yellow page under one cheek. Then switch to another. I hope there is an better toilet design.

I can see that all these posts are a year old. So If anyone is still out there LET ME KNOW IF THE PAIN IS WORTH IT after a year from the op. All I know is that I NEVER want to go through this again. In 2nd week now and am looking definitively at 3wks off work even though I was originally told one week would be enough!!!!!!! Have BMs from 2nd day after the op and now live in fear of them. The pain is indescribable and I am not surviving without serious painkillers. Honestly this all better be worth it in the end! I am going to try squatting next BM. I will try anything to combat the pain. I got NO information on diet and lucky I already eat a lot of fibre as anyone out there who doesn't look out. My next plan is fruit smoothies. Bananas are also supposed to be good for bowels as well. I hope everyone who went through this now has fully recovered because that will give me hope.

I had my surgery last Wednesday, it is now late Saturday night. The posts on this site had me SO SO terrified, and I am happy to report that so far it has not been nearly as horrible as described. That said, I did get Percocet prescribed, and can't imagine recovery without strong pain meds. Yes the meds can cause constipation, but for me the key has been to counter-act that side effect with massive amounts of water/ other hydrating fluids plus metamucil plus ducolax plus high fiber foods. I drank so much water I made myself nauseous, but it is worth it. The first day I ate nothing but applesauce and Ensure Clear, then added eggs, rice chips, black beans, apples, brown rice. Also took a little miralax late Thursday. BM started late Friday night and thanks to the pain meds was not a big deal. I'm going pretty frequently thanks to all the fiber and miralax, but it hasn't been painful. I am so relieved not to be in excrutiating pain - good luck to everyone else!

Looks like I'm not the only one who has almost unbearable pain with bowel movements after surgery. I made the mistake of waltzing out of the operating room hungry as a bear and heading to IHOP for an omlet. After that I phased back to toast soup apples and the like... and followed all the directions re fiber. After three days I had the first and most painful BM. I found its very hard to tell when you really need a BM versus just feeling like you do. In both cases you strain like mad and its very painful. In retrospect I should have asked the Doctor to proscribe a diet that would produce no stools whatever for the first week. Its very hard to sort the problem out once it starts.

I had my surgery 4 days ago on Friday Feb. 7th. I have been on a very clean high fiber diet such as organic oatmeal with berries for breakfast, soup or lentils for lunch, and chicken breast, salad, and/ or sweet potato mash and green mix salad for dinner. i have also been drinking one dose of MiraLax in the morning and Metamucil 3 times a day and 8-10 large glasses of water.
Today, 4 days after surgery, I had my first bowel movement. I took the recommendation from others to squat instead of sitting and I found it to be successful. i had little to no pain while going. However, the pain was extreme upon standing. I would let warm water from the shower run down my back after very BM. This was a bit soothing but still very painful. I have been taking 1000 mg of Tylenol every 4 hrs.
I hope this information helps others and a swift recovery for everyone!

Please realize that more than 4000 mg of Tylenol can be very harmful to your body. You might want to consider taking Ibuprofen to bridge the gap although my doctor told me not to take Ibuprofen past the first 3 days. When I googled the reason for it, I discovered that Ibruprofen can impede healing.

wow, i was gonna say, "report him!" - it's one thing to make a mistake (people are allowed), and then he wouldn't admit / explain it, and furthermore did not take care of the communications part even after knowing he f**ked up. What is he, a butcher??? but then what is the ferris doctrine, and what does it have to do with being in the army?

I have read most of these posts and I'm taking notes. My surgery is 11/5 and I will be glad to get it over with. I've been suffering for 25 years with these things and now they are prolapsed and external and internal...just basically a mess. I'm going shopping for many of the items mentioned in the posts, definitely the prunes. :-). My Dr recommends lots of fiber, as in sweet potatoes, fruit and vegetables. He said for 2-3 weeks just let pain be your guide as to what you do. Just limit your activites and listen to your body.
