Hi. My close relative had a brain damage, due to an accident, and he fell into coma. His eyes are closed and he is not aware of anything, I think. Doctor said his coma is classified as moderate and he said he was using the Glasgow coma scale. What is that? I would like to hear some info about GCS.

Hi. Glasgow coma scale is a neurological scale. It shows the level of consciousness of a patient, following brain injury. It is a simple scoring system, easy to use. Elements of Glasgow coma scale are three values – eye, verbal and motor responses. Comas are classified as severe with GCS <8, moderate with GCS -12, and minor, with GCS >13. Coma is defined as the patient is not opening his eyes, not uttering understandable words, and not obeying commands.
