I am a 37 year old male and at day 3 post op.  I pretty much want to die at this point.  I had my first BM last night and it hurt something fierce, but the pain afterwards was 10 times worse.  No matter what I did, I could get comfortable or get the pain to stop.  Finally slept for a few hours then started over today.  The thought of this continuing for two more weeks is almost too much.  My heart goes out to anyone who is abou to do this or is going through this.

I had surgery s week ago.  Without God I think I would have died of paini.  But I had a lot of people praying for me. The pain meds helped a lot as well.  I feel I am on the road to recovery.

I had stage 4 hemorrhoidectomy along with prolapsed rectum. The surgery was painless, but I'm on day 3 of recovery and am in tears. Vicodin did nothing for me. Percocet helps a little bit but made me really tired. Surprisingly ibuprofen really help the swelling and pain. Doctor told me to alternate that between the narcotics and the NSAIDS. I'm also on 3 laxatives. And have explosive diarrhea. This is the most miserable feeling in the world. I would not wish this on my worst enemy. I hope it recovers soon!

I had surgery on Wednesday. Today has been the worst day for me. I had my first BM this morning and have been in awful pain every since. My doctor did not tell me to do anything in the way of prep for this hemorrhoidectomy. I wish I had started the stool softeners and liquid diet a few days before surgery. I am so grateful for this site as I have learned some coping measures to make this bearable. (Milk of Magnesia, Miralax and Colace are ok to take together. Use the bathtub as a potty for the first few BMS. The warm water relaxes the pelvic floor and aids in a less painful experience.) I honestly thought I would die this morning. I also thought I would be back to work in 48 hours. LOL My colorectal surgeon did not properly educate me on what to expect and how to care for myself post-op. Thanks to all who have posted here. Your experiences have been very helpful.

I had wished I had done more research prior to this surgery but thought the doctors/nurses guidance would do it. That said, my procedure involved 2 large inner (banded) and one large external removal done 12/10/15. The procedure itself of course was not all that bad with the drugs and pain killers however the frustration started during the recovery process. The day after surgery was my first BM which was painful however the medication (Percocet) certainly helped. After that I had one more BM the 3rd day which I really had to force out, again slightly painful. Mind you I had been taking the prescribed laxatives and stool softeners as directed. The pain medication I was on certainly helped however there is still ALOT of discomfort and just as everyone mentions the sitz baths are a miracle to help with that. I continue those even to this day, although not quite as many. By the 7th day the pain had subsided enough for me to stop taking the pain medication. Unfortunately between the last BM (3rd day after surgery) and now I had not had another BM. I was extremely constipated and backed up and didn't know it because of the Percocet. I took Milk of Magnesia, stool softeners and a couple bottles of magnesium citrate over that day to help clear it out. I spoke with my doctor and he informed me that it will come out and it will be uncomfortable until then, "hang in there". That next morning (8th day after surgery) I was unable to walk, lay down or sleep due to the cramping and pressure. I used the bath to try and push and felt as though I was going to cause another hemorrhoid or possibly damage the work that was performed. After being unsuccessful I phoned the on call doctor and left a message with their answering service but decided to go to the hospital anyway, the pain was just too much. On my way there he called me back and stated again, "it will come out, you need to push". So I returned home and gave the bath another try, it was horrible experience I hope I never have to relive but after pushing extremely hard I was able to go. My first post op was later that day (the 18th) and the doctor says so far so good but mentioned the swelling was too much to really inspect internally but felt no damage was done. It didn't stop their either because I was trying to find the right balance between laxatives and stool softeners. During that process I was trying to go when I shouldn't have and just pushed out blood with no stool or I would be runny and it would burn. I ended up just stopping the laxatives all together, for me (I say this because it maybe different for everyone) the stool softeners and diet did it . At first I took the maximum dose of stool softeners as stated on the bottle but realized in doing so I was causing excessive draining which was yellowish with a foul odor. That problem subsided after I reduced the dosage to the minimum. I eat oatmeal for breakfast, take a fiber supplement, drink more water than you can imagine throughout the day and try and eat a high fiber lunch and dinner keeping the amounts small. I think my biggest problem prior which may have caused hemorrhoids was eating too much at one time and way too fast (I inhale food). I believe this procedure will change my eating habits and look forward to not having the frustration of dealing with hemorrhoids in the future. As of today 12/28/15, I'm having regular BM's, some hurt slightly more than others but bearable. I'm able to return to most normal activities but still a little tender at times. It feels good to get this out because I hope my experience will provide hope for anyone going through this. I did at times feel hopeless and really thought this was not going to ever end. If I would have read these posts beforehand or even right after surgery my recovery may have been even faster with less pain. Thank you to everyone who posts on here your insight has really been a blessing to me.

I agreed with Buzztripdream. I am a 60 years old male and have my hemorrhoidectomy surgery done 10 days ago. I cannot urinate after the surgery. I had to try very hard to drip few drops. I had to wake up every hours and tried for 10 minutes for urinary. Therefore, I could hardly sleep for few hours. I was very tired the next morning. I prayed in Jesus' name and I got the urination smoothed out in the late morning. I had some pain but within the tolerable range. I prayed for BM in the next day. Yes, I got the first BM after surgery and the stool was soft. Thus, I did have pain but was within the tolerable limits. I did not use the Hydromorphone, although my doctor prescribed me. I know the hydromorphone can suppress the pain but it could cause constipation. As long as I can tolerate, I do not use it. Although you may not convince the power of praying, you may consider the praying is a mindset training to keep you focus and courage that you have God to take care of you. An almighty being who can help you to go through the pain. When you have hope and faith, you have courage and hope to cope with your pain. Although I am not as lucky as Buzztripdream, I still have much pain after every BM. I believed my God will help me and my recovery has been progressing in a better path than many others.

Amen. I think I have less pain than my doctor told me. I was prescribed for the hydromorphone, and my doctor told me to call to her clinic for refill after the surgery. In fact, the pain was tolerable and I do not need the hydromorphone. After the surgery, I found that there was a group of people prayed for me at my church. Of course, pains are depended on each individual. However, my pain is less than my doctor's expectation. I believed it is the blessing than chances.
