Thank you, this is a helpful post and I hope you are continuing to do well. I had my surgery over three weeks ago and I have just started to be able to go out of the house for a few hours in preparation for going back to work next week. Before now the pain was very severe and also I had urgency which meant I had to be beside a toilet. Also I was awake during the night with pain and spasms in my rectal area.
My doctor said before the op I would probably need one or two weeks off work. In fact I am now anxious about whether I will manage back at work after four weeks. If I had known I might need fours weeks off I could have planned it properly in advance rather than feel stressed about returning to work and then having to cancel arrangements.
I have to say my recovery from this operation has been very painful and difficult. Hopefully the result will be worth it but I am sure I still have at least one haemorrhoid. My doctor did say there may be some tags left And she would review them.
I am taking lots of prunes and having a high fibre diet. Lots of baths and showers and also I am taking paracetamol and diclofenac. My doctor prescribed movicol but I found that a single diclofenac at night seems to be better.
All in all I am doing better now but I still dread BMs. Hopefully next week I will be ok at work.
My advice would be to take the pressure off and expect to need more time off than your surgeon recommends. Doctors just do the operation they don't suffer the recovery period. Also I suppose it depends on the extent of your problem before the op. My haemorrhoids were apparently very severe and my surgeon said she needed to do 'a lot of work down there'!
Let's hope we all return to normal after this very painful operation. I hope I never have to go through this again though if I get a good result and am pain free I would consider it worthwhile.

thank you so much for your words of encouragement..I had 3 large hemmroids taken out on sept 26.. I have had good and very bad days all depending on the bowel movements each day. also I ran out of oxecodone and my surgeon said to just use tylenol and advil, and that doesnt touch it...so thank you for giving something to look forward to maybe one more week and I will be more normal and out of pain..good luck to you!

So this time I did not go have a colonoscopy at the same time only the sigmoidoscopy which is supposed to be less invasive you don't have to drink that disgusting prep stuff. It also means that your bowel isn't cleaned out beforehand.
I was totally unprepared for my first bowel motion after surgery. I have had an appendectomy, four Cesarian sections, and a previous hemorrhoidectomy but nothing prepared me for the pain of this!
I had an open hemorrhoidectomy this time and I have experienced a lot of blood loss - much more than last time though I had staples before. The worst thing is I seem to have several small external and internal hemorrhoids - maybe a dozen? The doctor wouldn't say much about that either though he did say something about swelling. I have done a lot of research and I am hoping that indeed this is only swelling that will subside in time. Does anyone else have experience with this. I feel them with every bm just like before surgery and they add to the pain. I was and try to be hopeful that this is the hemorriodectomy to end all others. However this will be my last surgery definitely as it is the most horrendous experience I have ever gone through.
I want it to be worth it.
It was a huge decision to have this surgery. This is something I have been living with for 30 years since I was pregnant with my first child at 18! I just want this nightmare to end. I don't want my experience to be a negative one and stop others from getting the help they need to live a normal life without the pain and inconvenience of hemorrhoids. I have read a lot of blogs and there is a lot of negativity about the op and I have to believe that for some people it ends up being a positive thing after the healing etc . I accept that there are lifestyle changes I may need to make in order to prevent recurrence and I am more than ready to be on that road. I have been working on increasing my fitness and have lost 14 kg this year.
So I am fully committed to recovering to the best of my ability. I would appreciate any help with suggestions for diet esp over the next week or so. I am only taking panadol and was prescribed endone but wont take that as it gives me migrane and nausea (as if I don't feel bad enough) also I am taking aspalgin which helps when I need a little extra help with pain and gives me a nice sleep. I am also taking mettamucil and coloxyl senna tabs twice a day. I am very bloated though drinking a lot of water.
I would appreciate some feedback from others who have come through the surgery positively and some tips to help me through recovery , thanks. :)
