My husband had cervical fusion c5 through c7 in October. He had a very hoarse voice for almost 3 months. Voice started getting better a few weeks ago. Now he has a dry cough and says he feels like there is a lump in his throat that makes it uncomfortable to swallow and causes him to feel like he can't get enough air. We see the dr Wednesday. Anyone else with these issues? I'm getting worried, but I won't tell him.

Hi, Tammy.

It is possible that your husband is experiencing throat problems due to the cervical fusion operation. During the surgery, the surgeon may have used a metal plate or screws to hold the vertebrae together, and these can cause irritation or pressure in the throat area. This happened to a friend of mine several years ago. It was resolved successfully.

Additionally, the fusion process can cause swelling and inflammation in the area, which can lead to throat pain and discomfort.
