At times I've used my laptop while lying in bed with it resting on my chest, directly over my heart. After awhile, inevitably I start getting a hot feeling accompanied by the feeling of accelerated heartbeat and a dull pain, not like any other chest pain I've ever experienced from either muscle strain or aerobic exhaustion. At its gentlest, it feels like my heart is knocking, saying "hey, remember me, I'm running this ship and your jamming my frequencies!" At its worst I can imagine a cartoonish bolt of electrical current being slowly drilled into my chest cavity by say, the bad guy from Iron Man 2. It's a pulsing sensation that travels in sync with a penetrating heat, like a car seat warmer but much more immediately noticeable.
When I compensate by moving the computer lower, my stomach gradually starts churning, twitching, or aching. If I use a fat enough pillow between my body and the laptop, the symptoms subside, though my chest usually feels a little funky, like 10% of the initial burning sensation, or how like if you ask your neighbor to turn down their music because you can't sleep, you'll still hear and feel the same beat and bass through the wall and so you're constantly aware of the initial bad feeling.
I worry because my daughter also does the same thing with her computer and often falls asleep under it. Other posts I've read say it's harmless, but I get the feeling that's a best-case scenario supported by the lack of longitudinal studies, given how recent laptops and specifically, long-term laptop horizontal direct body contact, have been around.

Hi, I have been having terrible pains in both of my legs while I sit in the livingroom with my feet up in a reclining chair and working on the computer in the evenings. My worst pain is in my right side starts in the lower hip, runs down my theigh and I get hot burning feelings around the calf of my leg. I have a hard time walking around after that and once in bed I toss and turn all night in pain. Starting last night I am not going to work on my computer with it on my lap to see how I feel in a few days.
I hope there is no permanent damage from my Toshiba Laptop!

wow from reading these comments i had no clue other people felt this same pain. clearly its a problem that needs to be diagnosed. is it a fact that its radiation?

I had my android phone by my pillow listening to music while going to sleep. I woke up with what felt like a laser burn to my right temple! I jumped up, rubbing my temple and looked in the mirror. I appeared to have burn marks there. I still feel the effects of it even though it happened a couple of weeks ago. I no longer use wifi near me when sleeping. It is the only thing I can think of that would cause such a thing.

Have you investigated using a lead drape like they use in a dental office for x-rays? They are not cheap, but perhaps they would divert the energy from computer or wi-fi.

Hi, I do not have a Mac only an old Acer laptop. I have had 4 misscarages this year and each time i knew way before i started bleeding because i had strong period pains weeks before and lower abdomen pains. Once I noticed that i started getting the pains when i used my laptop (i always have it on my knee) but i didnt think on it too much and thought it was just a coincidence. Then I have noticed it a couple times before. Now I am pregnant for the 5th time and I have had a scan and the baby was fine (I have not been on my laptop for a while) then yesterday, i went on the laptop on my knee and got terrible period pains almost straight away. I told my partner and he said, "yeah, that's why i don't have it on my knee, it always causes me pain" so now i have found this site, i think it is not just a coincidence anymore and maybe it is even causing the miscarriages???

So glad I found this sight as I wanted some answers to the question about laptop radiation! I have HP laptop. I get this subtle ache in my testicles, which obviously worries me to no end, as testicular cancer, premature impotence or fertility problems spring immediately to mind! I've grown used to it however, out of necessity. As my laptop is highly useful tool being a student and active social net worker. I just ignore the pain. Its some kind of magnetic radiation, I presume, which springs from the battery. I want to know how unsafe or potential hazardous this is? No one can give me any answers although its good to know I'm not the only one who suffers -- and suffers from the anxiety of not knowing whats wrong!
Anyway, I'm certain this magnetic radiation which passes through our bodies when the laptop is on cannot be healthy. I'm going to Google information on the effects of magnetic radiation on the body after long exposure and I'd advise others to do the same.
I think men and woman should be concerned as our reproductive organs may be compromised

Hi Guys,
I have been experiencing the tingling in my thighs too when I rest my mac-laptop on them. I know the tingling comes from the laptop and was just checking online to see if there are any research on this problem, when I came upon your blogs. Thanks for posting all your concerns. I would figure that it must be the electronic charges and radiation that the circuits of the computer emits. This is not good; it might mean that our bodies are been bombarded with harmful radiation that are affecting our cells. The tingle may come from dying or fatigue cells or tissues. I wonder if there are presently any research regarding these equipments that most of us are surrounded ourselves with daily. How much radiation are being filtered in our cells, and how much this is throwing off our bodies homeostasis and forming cancerous cells?
Doctors who are not into research, tends to shove off things that they are not familiar with, although the facts are facing them. Please continuing posting any health issues are update on having laptop near your body. By the way, I try working with my laptop on my bed, a few inches from my leg, and I still feel a slight tingle in my right hip located near the computer. I even place the computer on a eating tray with legs and place a pillow under the try; yet I still feel the tingling sensations. Whatever is in the computer that is affecting my cells in this manner is unhealthy. I can determine this without a doctor’s approval.

Just posted a reply; then found this info on Mac regarding the proper use of their laptop.
Using Your MacBook Pro
When you’re using your MacBook Pro or charging the battery, it is normal for the bottom of the case to get warm. For prolonged use, place your MacBook Pro on a flat, stable surface.
Do not leave the bottom of your MacBook Pro in contact with your lap or any surface of your body for extended periods. Prolonged contact with your body could cause discomfort and potentially a burn.
The bottom of the MacBook Pro case functions as a cooling surface that transfers heat from inside the computer to the cooler air outside. The bottom of the case is raised slightly to allow airflow that keeps the unit within normal operating temperatures. In addition, warm air is vented from the slots in the back of the case.
Warning: Do not place your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material when it is on, as the material can block the airflow vents, in particular the rear vents, and cause the computer to overheat. Never place anything over your keyboard when operating in closed-lid mode. This can cause your computer to cycle on and off which might create excessive heat and drain your battery. Never turn on your computer unless all of its internal and external parts are in place. Operating the computer when it is open or missing parts can be dangerous and can damage your computer.
It would have been nice if Mac had this essential info on a sticker that was placed on the front of each computer when purchased, since most people find it convenient to work with a laptop wherever and whenever they can. I guess each individual has to be health conscience, health smart, listen and tune in to what our bodies are telling us as we use these high tech modern gadgets; not everyone has time to read a 135 page computer manual.

My husband and I both sit with our laptops on our laps for about an hour in the evenings for about the past 3 months. I have taken to putting a heavy rug between the laptop and my abdomen. Otherwise, the minute I start using it, my lower abdomen starts fluttering twitching. It reminds me of when I was pregnant and the baby was moving around in there - and that's exactly the area I feel this in. It can lead to nausea too, but mostly it's just an uncomfortable creepy feeling that gets more extreme the longer I use the laptop.

with my lap top in my lap for a few minutes i am getting in on this topic....I am a 54 yr old woman...been experiencing pain in ovaries and abdoman....the legs you figure is from the heat....so i have been putting the thing on the arm of my chair but sometimes...I think it messes with my heart rate as well....I actually spoke to the clerk at my VA health care facility and she said that they are having young women who carry their phones in their bra's are getting biopsy's....hmmmmmm........surely we will have to each take responsibility and stop doing this to ourselves...somehow....i thought about a lead shield as well but that would sure be heavy.....thank you all for sharing....by the way we used to all use electric blankets and were sick all the time....my hair was falling out as well...so the electromagnetic thing is worth looking into.....

The cause of the twitching frling andthe illl feelings is the radiofrequency/microwave radiatin beingemitted by the computer. An ipad has several antennas in it. It is stronger thatn a cell phone. I have developed Electormagnetic Intolerance and am very ill. My issue started outfirts with my cell phone, then my lap top and wireless mouse. Now I am a prisioner in my home. I am affected even by cell tower transmissions. Some peole can develop the sensitivity and it ruins thier lives. Actually what ruins their lives is the industry and government denyingthat the symptoms and illness exist. However, a growing number of people are beingaffected adn atsome point--many years and dead people later--eveyone will know that ths stuff is dangerous. I hope tht somebody grows a conscious in the industry or government before too manyh others have to suffer like I am

It has nothing to do with the type of laptop you use, it's all laptops.. Laptops use Wifi,it a type low frequency electro magnetic radiatiation.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer — part of the World Health Organization — agreed that there's limited evidence that cellphone radiation is a cancer-causing agent (carcinogenic). As a result, the group classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to people.
The reason there is only limited evidence to suggest that radiation from cell phone and other electronic equipment that us low frequency radiation to transmit information is because there has been little research done to prove one way or the other. There is a push by the industry to keep this information under wraps. In 1996, there was a law passed to protect telecommunication companies from litigation in the even that anyone wanted to sue them due to the side effects fro using their products.
I'm a nurse and I have numerous friends who carry their cell phones in their pockets, and they have recently had to have their ovaries and uterus removed due to tumor growths. I'm not just talking one tumor, their female organs were barely recognizable from the amount of tumors growing on their organs and these were young women of childbearing years.
I too get pelvic pain from laptop use, that's how I ran across your post, I was researching to see how common it was. I have been complaining about this for a few years now. I too would get mid cycle cramping and bleeding from placing my laptop on my abdomen. Laptops use the same frequencies as cell phones and I would highly recommend anyone who uses a laptop not to put it on their lap while using the wifi feature. Please don't carry your cell phones in your pockets or place them close to your heads, use you speaker feature or text. There IS evidence to prove these devices cause cancer, you need to look to research being done in other countries that are more concerned about the health rather than the profits. There is a lot of money tied up with these devices and I would suggest not being naïve and look at all the evidence, follow the money. Investigate who paid for the research and if there is a financial incentive to deny the danger.

I have the same problem, I feel a numbing/burning sensation in my testicles. I think the medical community should step in and investigate the effects of laptos in our balls.
