To summarize the long post on cervical fluid:

When you are ovulating (fertile) your cervix produces a jelly-like or stretchy egg white type fluid. The excessive wet/jelly/egg white-like mucus usually lasts two days. This is when you are MOST fertile. If you are trying NOT to get pregnant, you need to use PROTECTION several days before and a few days after this "jelly/egg white" part of your cycle.

So your cycle will typically go like this:

Week 1: Period/Bleeding
Week 2: Dry underwear
Week 3: Wet underwear (white/thick, clear/stretchy, back to white/thick)
Week 4: Dry
___

Whether you are trying to get pregnant or trying to avoid it, I recommend, "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Wechsler. It clearly explains and educates you about your body.

I wish that OB/GYN's would educate women about this.

I've been having this for some time now-and its like ugh- sometimes it itches and i just wanna scratch it-but theres nothing to scratch-i tried douching and it helped for like 2 days and then back to the same old. i get a little bit each day and am worried. i want to tell my mom but i dont want her to think im having sex.because parents never understand. please help and clarify this for me.

I am 19 and have had the same problem probably for a year or so? A bit everyday, despite showering everyday. I'm too shy to go to doctors and reading up online has just made me extremely worried. Should I be?

I am having the same problem. Two weeks ago I was having some itching, I went to the doctor and he said I had BV and gave me some cream. I still had itching, went back and the doctor said that the cream irritated that area and he gave me boric acid suppositories. The itching has let up mostly but now I'm having this mucus like slimy discharge. I have no idea what is going on! I have an appt. with my doc again on Monday. Will let you know what happens. But I am freaking out over here.

douching is not very good for you... your insides clean themselves naturally. I get the jelly like clumps ever few months for the past 6 or so years. Im 30, get pap tests once a year, its nothing to concern myself with my doc said (lady doctor). So voila. Just goota live with it!!

You're most likely ovulating. If it doesn't smell and there is no pain in your lower abdomen or when urinating than it's probably not an infection.

I've noticed this with myself (and I'm a lot older than you girls). I hadn't noticed it when I was your age (it was a different consistency then) but started noticing it in my late twenties. I've been checked for STI's multiple times, too, and have always been clean and safe. Also, I've been monogamous for five years.

If you're that worried you should consult your crotch doctor. Don't be afraid to ask them about. They'll be able to look at your mucus cells and tell if there are any abnormalities.

I have the same problem... and I never knew what it was. I am a virgin, and I've had this ever since I started, which was about two years ago. I'm fifteen, and was never "touched" down. It has a wierd odor and I'm not sure if it would be considered "stinky" but when I'm on my period it is really stinky.

okay i'm a bit confused, on reply made it sound like when the fluid is jelly like it means your not fertile, yet another made it sound like that means you are fertile and ovulating? which one is it? i've been getting this stuff a lot, every week cept for whenever my period decides to show up, used to be on birth control but my script ran out right before we moved so i've been off for several months, my periods were irregular before, we just moved again so i still havnt been able to find a new obgyn, so what does it mean if i'm getting this stuff every week? its not itchy, it doesnt smell. i dont hurt, i dont think its an infection as my husband thoroughly cleans himself regularly every day especially before we have sex, does it mean i'm firtile or not? even if we found a doc dont really have the money for it should i try one of those fertility test or something?

Ladies,

I've got the jel like substance myself. I know its not a sign of pregnancy because I've been pregnant three times and didnt get this when I was pregnant. It's also not an STD because I haven't had sex. If I'm reading the material on cervical fluid right, your discharge is thin and watery when you're ovulating and can get thick and jel like right after you've ovulated. So if anything this is a sign that you didn't get pregnant and you'll probably start your period in a few days. For those of you who've had it for a long period of time, I really do not know. I'd say ask your doctor.

I am 22 and i have been having sex since i was 14. Judge if you must, im just being honest. After i broke out of a 5 year relationship i stopped taking the pill and didnt have much sex for about a year. About a year ago i started seeing someone and we have moved in together. Obviously i started taking the pill again. However i have been having problems with the pill so i am changing to a new one and im not taking anything at the moment. I just came of my period and i have been experiencing this same discharge you are all speaking of. This sounds like what is mentioned in the article the other lady posted, it seems to be linked with the period cycle, as i have said, i have just come off my period, so it sounds normal. However whilst i was on the pill i didnt experience this. I wouldnt worry too much as it is natural and if it does not smell, is only a little amount and does not hurt or itch etc, then it shouldnt be from an infection.

To the girl who said there was occasional pain and itching, that sounds like it could be internal or external thrush, although the discharge is not normally clear. I would see a nurse asap, as infections left un attended can leave you infertile and cause more and bigger problems. For the girl who says it is dripping down her leg!! Please see someone! That amount is obviously not normal, if the previous infections you have had have spread further and you leave it untreated you could become infertile and you may have given it to your boyfriend. If you find it embarrassing you can request to see a female nurse instead of a doctor, which ever you do please do soon!

Hope that helped some of you xxxx

Im in the UK so this may not apply but unfortunately you cant just take a fertility test. You have to have been trying to get pregnant for a certain period of time before you can have the tests done. I know!! It sucks!! I dont think there are self fertility tests but i could be wrong, it may be different where you are in which case, it wont hurt to take a test.

Some people however unfortunate, just get more discharge then others. I have friends who have to wear panty liners everyday because of it where as i dont really get any apart from just before and after my period. Getting that discharge does not mean you are infertile i dont think, as it has no relation to your tubes or womb etc. It is produced by ducts lower down. It does mean however that it is more difficult and virtually impossible for the sperm to travel past the vagina and find your egg. This could obviously prove difficult when trying to get pregnant. However horribly embarrassing it may be, please see a doctor! If there is something wrong, leaving it will only allow it to get worse! Then again, it could be nothing to worry about, in which case your mind will be at ease and you can get on with your life. So please, see a doctor! If you find that so embarrassing, request to see a female nurse! At the end of the day, all women experience discharge so it wont be so bad right! Good luck, i hope things work out for you xxx
