Hello,

I'm a 22 year-old, healthy, fit male, and for the past several days I've been suffering from shortness of breath that has so far given me several restless nights. Because it seems to worsen dramatically when I lie down, and it feels like this substantial pressure on my chest, as if a small child sat there. There is no pain of any description associated with it at all, but I do cough quite significantly when the condition is at its worst. The past few months I've also seemed to develop sneezing that may be described as 'more than usual', and just the other day I experienced very dramatic and out-of-the-blue eye-watering when I sat by the computer, to the point where it was almost impossible to keep them open.

It hasn't been a constant shortness of breath, however, and instead seems to go on and off, from hardly any discomfort at all, to very labored breathing. Yesterday I spent most of the day by the computer, and felt just about nothing. I was almost beginning to think it might have gone away, but last night I once again had to give up sleeping, as it was very hard work breathing in a horizontal position.

I've had a similar experience before - I'm guessing about a year ago - but that went away after about a week, and vanished as quickly as it had emerged. I've felt absolutely nothing since, until now.

I've never had any illnesses of any description that required medical attention, besides asthma when I was about 8-9 years old. That vanished, however, but could it be returning? My family doesn't have any history of any serious health issues, either.

I have a hard time imagining that it's heart-related, and I sincerely pray that it isn't. I've never had heart issues of any kind, and during this recent period with shortness of breath, I've also tried doing cardio exercise, which did not seem to have any negative effects. My current job also requires heavy lifting, and that has not affected me, either.

Generally speaking, I don't feel much - if anything - during the day, but when I lie down to sleep at night, I can rest assured that I will awaken again 2-3 hours later, gasping for air.

Any ideas?

Thank you very much for your time

I am 38 years, fit, and also had what was termed "a touch of asthma" when I was a child.  I could not have described this any better than you have but I have been experiencing this off/on for about 3 weeks.  I am on an extended employment assignment in Germany where there is no air conditioning.  Instead they leave their windows open at night.  At first I had attributed this to something blooming, pollen, mold spores, or other airborne substance that I may be allergic to.  It happened again tonight and I am up replying to this at 5:30 AM on a day that otherwise I would have slept late.  Hopefully someone can give us some insight on this.
