I too have addisons and i'm on 15mg of hydrocortisone a day. I just don't do what the dr. says to do. I take my meds every other day or skip at least 2-3 days in a rowe and i feel just fine. I'm able to function like there is nothing wrong with me. When i start to get tired i know i need my meds. If you do this you will drop the weight also ,cause i have and i was even heavy before i started on this medicine. I keep my salt intake up and drink lots of fluids and i feel just fine. Good luck to you all....

I have Adrenocortical carcinome ACC.  I have been on Hydrocortisone for over 4 years now, for the first 3yrs I lost weight going down to 112 lbs but this last year I am putting on weight I am now 142 lbs and gaining, I didn't mind at first as I was far to thin at 112 lbs, I wouldn't call myself fat now but I have gainded weight around my waist and my love handles hang out over all my clothes, I am on 20mls daily, my adrenal gland has started to work after been on Mitotane (which puts your other adrenal gland to sleep) but my endocrine doc tell me that it is not fully working so I have to continue with 20ml, well he tinks I am taking 25ml.  are ther any excercise that I can do for my waist and love handle

If you have addisons the last thing you want to do is cut out salt, unless you want to become a regular feature at your local A&E dept.

He said yes keep ur physical activity going. So I have recently started gym and Eating right. No junk food, taking sugarfree in coffee etc instead of sugar itself eating whole grain foods etc - just trying to eat right. well I guess it's gonna go slow but constant effort will hopefully bring results. I will post it in future if I ll b able to lose my tummy right now my condition is like urs :( please also let us know if u find any way out to this ? Thanks :)

Yes I am on hydrocortisone medicine 10mg morning 5mg evening have been taking since 2 years and I had a flat belly before and when I started taking these i had bad food cravings that I couldn't resist eating but now my diet is more balanced. I watch wat I eat no whites only whole grain try to take 4 small meals a day and have recently joined gym. But right now my condition is that I have a muffin top my belly pops out when I wear jeans. Tell me pls what u eat and have u suffered from this belly bulge problem?? Any suggestions what to do and what u do ? U have been on this medicine from 2o years u never had belly fat problem??? Are u in shape u mean? What have u been doing for that? Coz I surely think the reason of my belly fat is hydrocortisone when I initially started I had very bad food cravings I didn't care abt and ate too much at a time. Since then I am unable to get that flat belly back also my face is moon shape and I got buffalo hump on my back neck coz of medicine. Pls suggest thanks

Hi texasmom,

Don't know if you are still struggling to exercise, but as someone who has had primary Addison's (in addition to POTS, Graves, and gluten intolerance) for the last 14 years, let me say that the more you make yourself exercise (even if it is just three minutes on the elliptical, like I started out at), the better your Addison's will get. I couldn't even walk for a while, and now I do an average of about 4-5 miles a day, plus a strength training workout 3-5 days per week. It has made my quality of life SO much better. If there is anything I can do to help, or any advice I can offer, please let me know, and good luck!

I was diagnosed with Addison's about 5 months ago and I quickly (felt like overnight) gained 20 pounds. I have been at this weight for at least 3 months, so the weight gain was within 1-2 months. I take 20 mg of hydrocortisone and a small does of fludrocortisone. I struggle daily to not put on more weight. The only way I am able to maintain (I seem to go down 3-4 lbs. then back up) is to eat primarily a primal or paleo type diet. If I am very consistent I will start a very slow decline in weight, but the moment I drink alcohol or eat bread or something outside of the norm then I bounce back up and stay there for about a week. I also am pretty active, I do between 40-60 minutes walking everyday and 3-4 times a week do a class such as Pilates, barre, aerobics, etc. If there is anyone that has had success is losing more than a few pounds to then gain them back (like what seems to happen with me), I would love to know what you are eating/exercising.

Do not cut salt out of your diet if you have primary addisons! Primary addisons results in hyponatremia, or low sodium, because your adrenals are not producing enough mineralocorticoids. It is often recommended to addisonians to eat a high sodium diet.

I hope no one takes this advice! Adrenal insufficiency is serious, and you should not skip your meds just to lose weight. Ignoring your doctors orders is risky. Adrenal crises are deadly, you're playing with fire!
