I just started the Depo shot 3 days ago. I was really paranoid about gaining weight but I am actually less hungry and have already lost 2 lbs. Its crazy i think the drug effects people differently. It depends on how your body responds to the hormone. Me personally I feel great!!

Hello All... %-)
I have read everyone's posts on here and want to thank everyone for the information.
I started taking DP in the summer of 2007 (Age 31). I was 125-130 pounds. I've ALWAYS been 125-130 pounds. No babies, no genetics to influence weight gain, don't eat much, exercise moderately. I noticed a slow, steady weight gain until Sept 2008, when I found that I weighed 140. During Sept. I gained 10 pounds. I then took my final shot at the end of Sept, and questioned the doc about the weight gain. Doc confirmed that DP causes weight gain, then told me that I had a "bad attitude" toward the DP. It's now February, and I'm working to get the weight off. I'd never even looked at a diet product until now.
I hate to say it, but it sounds like a lot of womens' weight gain issues are from various hormones that our doctors give us to treat varying problems (from menstrual pain to birth control to headaches). Then we get fat and doctors (or sales-people) suggest even more pills. I've also had emotional side-effects from DP that made me feel like I belonged in the movie "The Exorcist." Didn't act possessed before the DP.
Since going off the DP, my emotions have been NORMAL. I haven't seen any weight loss yet. I'll try some of the weight loss methods suggested by your posts.
If you're considering taking DP shots for birth control-- just get your man some condoms and call it a day. If you have headaches or endo, consider other treatments. Don't take hormones unless it's absolutely necessary. It's not worth it. Thank you and best of luck to everyone!

GET OFF IT!!! I had my first shot 2 years ago. Because of my age (35) and because I am a smoker this was the only option that the doc gave me. She did tell me about the weight gain and to take calcium supps. I gained 25 lbs within the first month. Then added about 2-3 lbs every time I went back for my next shot. I managed to hold it steady the last 6 months but now I am off the product and I have gained another 5. The bloating, sickness, body swelling, breat engorgment, extreme mood swings the first few month and again now etc is unpleasant. I am very thankful that I do not have some of the condtions that some of these women have. It is not worth the side effects. Go on the pill. There are so many to choose from now. Depo was easy - no periods were great, but now the side effects to my health are a worry. You are too young to have this stuff in your system.

I was on depo between the ages of 24-30. I gained 50lbs. The first few years on it were good for me - around the fourth year I rapidly began gaining weight, going up a pant size pretty much every shot. I began to have anxiety attacks and staying awake at night.
All of the doctors i consulted suggested I might have a thyroid issue or that I had unhealthy eating habits. At first I chalked it up to stress and moving in with my boyfriend - but I am a vegetarian and have been raised on healthy food my entire life. I've always lost weight when I've been stressed, not gained it. I do not go to fast food restaurants, like sweets or overeat. I walk everywhere. The women in my family are curvy, but not overweight.
I ate less than I ever have in my life and could not stop the rapid weight gain. I was depressed because I could not figure out what to do. I've always been comfortable with my body - even my rings and bracelets wouldn't fit me. I began to really doubt myself.
Eventually I accepted that it was the Depo. I went off of it 16 months ago and went on the pill. My anxiety has decreased, my face no longer looks puffy, I don't have insane cravings, and I'm slowly losing weight - I've gone down two sizes without changing my exercise habits or changing my eating habits. My only regret is that I didn't link the massive weight gain and depression issues to Depo earlier - I'd probably have 20 less pounds to lose.
The best thing about being off of it is that I'm finally starting to look and feel like myself again. Trust your instincts, not what your doctor tells you.

I went on the Depo in October last year and was due for another just after Christmas. I am so glad I decided not to have it done again - It almost destroyed my relationship. I had the worst mood swings ever, it was like I was Jekyl and Hyde. One minute i'd be fine, then totally flip out. It was awful!
Since coming off the Depo my mood swings have disappeared. BUT - I am very bloated now. It's horrible. It's just around my stomach area and breasts. I'm a healthy, active person as it is, but now i'm going to the gym everyday and eating like a rabbit just to try and shed this weight!
Also, since coming off the depo, i've been on a constant, but light, period. The doctors said it's normal, but surely not for almost 2 months?!
I thought the Depo would be the end of my worries - No more periods, no forgetting to take the pill.. But I wish I had never gone on it :-(

This is ridiculous!
I was prescribed this drug when I was 16 years old!! for my terrible period pain! I was 100 pounds and a champion swimmer! I have since (in 3 years) ballooned to almost double my previous weight! I had to give up swimming because my coach said i was slowing because of my weight!
I thought it was just late puberty weight but now im not so sure! i had my last shot in january so ill be free next month but if everyone else is finding it so hard to lose weight i dont know what im goin to do!
Iv also had to start anti-anxiety medication since goin on DP for my panic attacks and mood swings!
this drug shouldnt be prescribed any longer! nobody knows the damage it does until its too late!
I hope the weight comes off but if it doesnt i fear only more hormones will help!

I just want to put it out there that the weight gain associated with Depo is not "a matter of calories," as some readers have suggested. Maybe progesterone stimulates your appetite, but when I was on Depo (just one three-month cycle), my weight shot up seven pounds almost overnight. I figured that I was eating wrong or not exercising, so I started eating strictly 1200 calories per day and doing cardio for at least 60 minutes 4 or 5 times per week. I lost no weight during a two month period of doing that.
I went off the shot, and within a month my weight is back to normal-- and I've dropped my exercise to 30 min/4-5 times week during this period.
Don't EVER go on Depo. It also makes your hair fall out. Screw that!

I went on depo in october 2008 since then I have gained 40+lbs. I feel and look bloated! I acutely look like I am pregnant! I am eating less, taking my vitamins, and exercising and I am STILL putting on the pounds. I am over 200lbs now, I look disgusting, I feel sluggish, slow, and lazy, and my appetite is atrocious! DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG!!! I dont care what the doctors say, this drug does mess with you metabolism. I am going to get off this drug and stick with condoms till I can loose some of this weight. I hope it will come off, i look disgusting!

yea im 17 almost 18 now and i 1st got the shot when i was 16 and the 1st year was okay besides the 1st 6 months i bled nonstop and then started spotting and then eventually stopped well the summer was coming around while i was still spotting and i gained 15lbs in a month and i eventually lost most of it throughout the summer then october came around and then i had no bleeding at all and still havent since then, well lets say in a 4 month period i've gained 62 lbs, when i 1st got the sho i weighed 130 now i weigh 194 and ive been off the shot 4 about 4 months lost 5 lbs with hard exercise, and then gained it back with like 2 days, i never did nething before i got on the shot like eat ood foods or nething i was one of those kids who could eat eat eat and not gain any weight well it seem that anything i eat now i gain weight, my dr, said that a young girl like me can change within a ear and tat was y i gained weight i just laughed and yelled not n 4 months!!! but she still denies that it has nething to do with the depo shot, well any normal person can figure it out that u dont just gain over 60lbs n a 4 mo. period! YEAH it may increas appetite and everything but its sad to say i actually eat less than i did before and still manage to gain alot of weight per mo, its sad, yeah it may be a good form of not getting u pregnant and all but its really not worth the weight gain, migraines, fatigue, bloating and bone loss, well just some info 4 some of u out there
thanks 4 ur time

I have been on the depo shot for 9 months and after the first month started losing weight also. Depo affects everyone differently just like hormones affect everyone differently, my Dr. said that changes in levels of hormones can cause weight gain and loss, so YES it is possible to actually lose weight on the depo shot!

Hello everyone! The Depo shot is an awful drug; it is used to castrate horses and used as a castration for sex offenders. If used for too long you will develop osteoporosis, among many other problems. I know the doctors tell you that but who knows if it only develops after two years??? I received one shot on April 6, 2009, I gained weight in the first month. It is now July 20, 2009 and I have already lost about 6 pounds, just in the last week since the drug has left my system. My advice to anyone who wants to take this drug is to google it a little more, read blogs from other women. This drug has ruined people's lives! I wish you all good luck and I hope this drug does not harm your body.
